Best car polishing by far

Postby adrian » Mon Nov 13, 2006 9:25 am

Hi there. Someone drove into my S2000 and cracked the bumper and damaged the wing. They are paying for it so not too bad. But, when my car was in the body shop (a great place in Clones, Co. Monaghan called Michael Tynan's by the way) I got him to do a full body treatment and clean. The lad there had recommended I get it done as the 6 year old paint work was a bit dull even though I wax it every couple of months. Anyway, what they use is an electric car buffer, running at around 1700 RPM and a range of products from the 3M range. I didn't know 3M did car care products but they do. The results are astounding. The car even looks a brighter colour and every single swirl mark is gone.

They use a gum paste initially to take swirl marks off the car . It has mico grains in it which you can barely feel between your finers when feeling the paste. Then they buff that off and use a 3M polish. The whole car took 6 hours but it's amazing. I am just after getting it back so have not got taking photos yet but, I had to share it with you fellow motoring heads - I only though waxing/polishing by hand with turtle wax etc was good, this is a different league. Car looks literally bran new.

Some 3M products can be seen here:

and I think you can mail order from the UK. Well worth it. Thinking of buying an electric car buffer off ebay... but I would not think it's too good for the paint work to do that too often. Try and get your hand on some of those products! he had an old toyota twin am in for the cleaning work too it looked so dull and dead... he did a section of the bonet when I was there and it to lookd bran new. Incredible.

OK, will try and get pics soon....and find a link to buying the stuff in the UK on mail order

If you're getting a car polisher, make sure its the random orbital type - very safe on paintwork and can be used by novices (i.e me!) without the potential for paint burn. Porter Cable make some of the better ones out there, used in conjuction with the right compunds, the results are amazing, pics here.

Didn't realise 3M did detailing products myself, interesting...

Its quite safe - the random orbital motion takes care of that. I'd say you'd be fine using it a couple of times a year.

I hear ya fella. Someone reversed into my FTO outside the house last nite, very minimal damage but annoyed me all the same. Then I went and broke the front splitter on the RX-7 on Saturday, bleedin' kerbs
