Decision made on new motor.I hope! Engine Choice help please

Postby adrian » Thu Nov 08, 2007 9:03 am

So, having weighed it all up now that a decision has to be made... I have pretty much decided against a 2.7 to 3.0 litre Grand Cherokee/SUV type thing. For reasons of value, economy, resale, cool factor, road tax (which I hate paying), performance etc.... all in one bundle. I think it's a better family option then an SUV anyway. I have done the jeep thing and I want a car now... they are better for normal road use. See pics below. I will go for the 2005 new model as I think it looks 1000 times nicer then anything up to 04. I hope to go for a 2.0 FSI Quattro, but a 1.8T would do... as would a 1.9 TDi. Has anyone any suggestions on what the best engine option would be? It will be an S Line type looker anyway, that's for sure.

And I would be hoping to throw a set of the new RS4 wheels on it:

A nice choice to have for a 2nd car.

Would have a personal preference for the 2.0T FSI but the 1.8T won't exactly be slow. Wouldn't go for the diesel (though they have excellent diesel engines) unless you are doing the mileage or have an eye on resale time ( I'd imagine a low mileage diesel A4 would sell like hotcakes here in Ireland).

I on the other hand would go for the diesel. It is a heavy estate car afterall - if performance is what your are after then a heavy estate car is not the way forward. If you must have an estate buy the diesel, have it remapped if necessary, and as per MfFTO resale should be easy.

P.S. Is it just me or does that car look all wonky in the 3rd photograph, it's llike someone was messing with the aspect ratio and squashed the image.

Ha ! You finally decided upon one of the best looking estates on the road IMHO.

Here is our one. I don't really think that the 2005 looks much better than a good S-Line 2004.

In terms of engines we got the 1.9TDI - not so much out of choice, but this car had everything else I wanted and happened to be a diesel too.

After having this for a couple of months, I would definitely go for a petrol 18.T if I had a choice, diesels are really just too noisy, too shaky (when sitting idle) and requires a different driving style to a petrol which I don't really like.

Having said that the 1.9TDI 130BHP is still a great machine and when you get other goodies like the buffalino leather, S-Line kit and Bose it really makes the car.

I'd be thinking 130bhp 1.9 TDI if I was getting one. Was driving an automatic one from work 2 years ago and it's plenty quick, if not hugely refined.
