Alloy refurb

Postby Myfeckin FTO » Fri Apr 29, 2005 10:31 am

Guys,

Anyone on here ever get their wheels powder coated?
I need my white rims sorted - they are starting to look a little shabby.

I have come across a guy who is going to do them for me - will cost approx €150-€200 - I'll see how well he does my wheels before recomending him on the forum. Even those on standard GPX alloys might like to freshen them up a bit ( maybe even a colour change to black?). Or those with Red, Black or Blue cars might like to change from their silver coloured aftermarket alloys to white for that race look.

I'll see how I get on and what the quality of this chaps work is like and if theres enough interest maybe arrange a group rate. I'm gonna get them done while my cars in the bodyshop for a few days getting some other bits sorted.

Yeah - I'm still waiting on Funky P to send over my side skirts so I can get the car to bodyshop - But the Powder Coating guy can do the wheels overnight whenever we want - so if you want to send down the wheels (minus tyres) to me or the engineering company here in Shannon - I can sort straight away. I don't want my car on axel stands any longer than necessary so it needs to be an overnight job for me. I am going to stick with white rather than go black - he will sand blast the wheels completely before powder coating - cost will be between €150-€200.

BTW - Have you sorted out if those Brembo calipers are gonna fit under the 18"s?

minus tyres eh?? that's a little messy!

i haven't sorted the caliper situation yet but i would hope that they will fit, i got some measurements from Tony and by the looks of it they will just about fit but if not it should only need a small spacer so i'm reasonably confident!

speaking of spacers, i reckon i'm going to try and bring the rear wheels out a little cos they are really far in with the side skirts and rear aprons!

The wheels need to be stuck into an oven and heated up before being powder coated, you wouldn't want to melt you're tyres would you ;)

Its an engineering company that is powder coating not a Tyre centre hence why we need to loose the tyres for them.

My rims are 8J rims with a 36 offset so they sit very well in the arches - just a couple of mm outside of the line of the body. If the worst comes to the worst we could talk about a swop before powder coating time. They would easily handle the brembos. The problem with spacers is that they could upset the handling - you'll need to make sure the bore of the spacer is exact so that the wheels sit ok on the hubs.

thanks for the tip CJ, but i twigged it! i;ve seen enough episodes of american chopper at this stage!!
it's just messy getting them off and put back on!!

as for the spacers, it'll be done to order, basically the'll cut it exactly the way i need it so it shouldn't affect it adversely, hoping it will improve it slightly as i will have a wider track!

CJ, don't suppose you fancy photoshopping my alloys to include the silver rims! i'll pull a picture from the uk site to show you

This guy can now take the wheels with tyres on so theres even less hassle - spoke to him last night - he has some mad ideas as to what he can do with wheels - literally any colour (he suggested "copper" for my rims)or a mix e.g. chrome rim and black spokes etc. He is powder coating a lot of performance bike frames and parts around Limerick so it doesn't have to be wheels if ye want something powder coated.

I'll post up some pictures when he has finished with my rims.
I have pretty much decided to change my white rims to black - he will sand blast the white off - powder coat in black and then lacquer.
The cars in the bodyshop at the minute fitting the Hiro spoiler and DC side skirts so it should look the bizz when it comes together.

If anyone wants to get their rims done - even the standard GPX 16's would look well in chrome or black - then let me know - cost will vary according to what you want done but should be somewhere between €200 - €250.
