Knocking noise from front driver's side wheel area

Postby Justin » Fri Mar 28, 2003 10:29 am

Over the last couple of days I noticed a strange knocking noise from the front drivers side. It usually only happens after fairly heavy braking. There is no noise when braking but then when you drive off again there 3 or 4 loud knock sound from that area and then it stops. I taugh it might be something to do with the brakes so I took off the wheel and checked pads and calipers. I also tried pressing the brake paddle down hard while the wheel was off and then turning the hub by hand to generate the noise, but no joy.

Anyone had this problem before. I had the front ARB droplinks and bushes replaced recently. :?:

Justin, did you check if the guard behind the disk was rubbing? Also, it might be no harm to take the caliper assembly apart and copperslip up the back of the pads. It could alsa be a worn CV joint, this would be more apparent when cornering however.

The brake disc seems to move freely without any obstructions. I'm beginning to think it something to do with the suspension/shocks etc. It seems to happen more as a result of the nose of the car dipping under heavy braking rather than the brake assembly causeing it. I've tried bouncing the car up and down while stationary but this is very hard to do with an FTO ( my full weight of 14 stone on the wing doesn't hardly budge it !!! ).

I think I'll try braking hard while pulling into my driveway and then taking off the weel and turning the hub by hand. I might see or hear exactly where the noise is coming that way. Only trouble is I'd have to put the wheel back on to try it again !!.

Drive the car slowly over rough road and listen for the noise. What you are describing is either a suspension bushing or ball joint. Hard to know without further investigation. I had a similar noise and it turned out to be the steering tracking rod end. A CV joint will only knock when the steering is locked in a particuler direction when taking off.

It could be that the spring(s) might not be seated correctly and thus slipping and the knocking noise that your getting is the spring trying ti seat itself into the groves of the endplate(s)

Knocking noise

Postby elmo » Sat Apr 19, 2003 12:31 pm

got the same thing coming from drivers side of my GPX.
Justin when you put it on a hill, facing downwards, and turn from lock to lock, does it make the same noise?
Have you found out what it is yet? I reckon it is just a bush or something but a suspension joint I took it took said it was worn shock absorbers. After market shocks and even originals are hard to find and expensive here in AUS so I hope it is just a bush.
