Bore the Engine to a 2.2L

Postby rsg » Thu Nov 11, 2004 11:24 pm

Hey guys,

Wanted to know if anyone has ever tried this on the FTO?

I was thinking of getting the engine bored out to a 2.2 Litre, and then re-sleaving the cylinder with chrome sleaves. After this I wanted to either ceramic coat the pistons, or to buy some new ones such as Wiseco ceramic coated pistons.

This will apparently reduce friction quite a large amount, keep the pistons and engine cooler, prolong engine life as well as increase performance(naturally).

Has anyone got any info or had any experiences with this?

Raf,

Not convinced you will get large gains going down this route - did you find out what the story is with the power loss on your engine yet? - I would imagine you would be throwing good money after bad unless you know whats happening there first.

If you want max BHP gain for the money - you would be better off going down the turbo route - the GR engine seems to take well enough to a turbo - there are already a few in existance in the UK.

I haven't found the problem yet, but I;m gonna take it to another mech so he can check it out.

I went and got a price today, and the guy there reckons the equivalent of about 300pounds will get my pistons ceramic coated, bored the engine out to a 2.2litre, ceramic coat the head and the exhaust inside and out.
I think that a very good price, plus this reduces engine heat and I've heard of a few guys doing this before turbo charging as your engine doesn't get as hot and performs a lot better.

It's also a lot cheaper to ceramic coat as opposed to buying Wiseco pistons for example which alone will cost me about 600pounds.

There is nothing really stopping me from getting a turbo afterwards, and having it perform better. I'll just have to get some facts of this and see wha sort of gains I can expect. In the mean time I still have to find out what's up with the car.
