anybody use this before!!

Postby paul2508 » Sun Jan 31, 2010 11:52 pm

im thinking of purchasing this
http://cgi.ebay.ie/CARBON-FIBRE-LOOK-3D-FILM-FROM-3M-DI-NOC-SERIES-30X100_W0QQitemZ180448132179QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item2a038bfc53
going for a carbon look inside car, i purchased a set of kmc carbon dials in recently purchased cf effect steering wheel.
was looking at the tutorial on their site seems pretty good plus the 3m adhesive is strong too. can you coat this with lacquer too ? just to give it a nice clean shine. :D

best stuff I've seen is the FoliaTec film. about €45 for a small roll in Halfords. Used in on the interior of my blue FTO.

I wouldn`t put lacquer on anything like that. I`ll simply crack after a short time and will look worse than original dash.

I used this fabric to cover my door cards and centre concole
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1m-x-1-4m-Black-Carbon-Fibre-Look-Vinyl-Cloth-Fabric_W0QQitemZ230387976148QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item35a43187d4

It`s not self adhesive but thanks to that you can move it on the aplication. I used normal spray adhesive from Halfords

I`m very happy with the result, it`s not glossy but I love the satin look of it and personally think that satin looks a lot better on the interior than gloss look carbon

the stuff you linked first is just carbon look film. you just stick it on and it's already glossy. no need to lacquer.

the problems with doing your dash:

The dash is squishy vinyl
The dash gets very hot from the sun so bubbling would be a problem.
The film is pretty glossy so you'd get reflections on the windscreen.

Would look cool enough though. I think Seb did his glovebox.

just did this today with the foliatec from halfrauds and is quite good and easy to use, although got abit dodgy around the lighter but once the lighter is in its perfect. Seems expensive for a bit of paper but well worth it. Thanks for the idea  :P

Nice work Stewy

would look a whole pile better if you refitted the metal surround for the cig lighter, you also won't risk melting the film with the hot cig lighter.

Nice job on separating the double DIN into 2 halves with the dividing strip
