the heater is taking heat from the matrix which is essentially a radiator with a cold air fan blowing through it.

is there white gunge in the oil cap or is it misfiring? the fact that the heater is working would suggest the coolant is circulating.

sounds like your head gasket is on the way out. it's possible that water is only entering one cylinder, sometimes gaskets just go in certain points. Had a head gasket break down between 2 cylinders on a Fiat i had, just caused a misfire - no water or oil loss or mixing.

The usual reason for a gasket going is overheating, but it's unusual that yours isn't completely gone - as in you're not getting water and oil mixing.

What kind of shape is your water pump in? check for leaks from there.

My theory: water not circulating quickly enough, overheating caused gasket trouble, 2 seperate problems to rectify (but I'm not a mechanic so...)

You should probably change the timing belt and water pump. As the belt will be off, you'd be as well to do the gasket at the same time.

If steam is coming from the exhaust, that means it's going into the combustion chambers through the gasket and being "burnt" along with the fuel and air.
If the white "smoke" is simply being blown under the car and not actually coming from the exhaust the it's a different story.

Be a right pain to do the belt and pump, only to have to strip it again to do the head.
Maybe do a compression test on the cylinders.

hi mate have you checked the condition of the rad internally it could be blocked does it get hot top and bottom or externally what sort of condition are the fins in as they rot and fall apart so it loses the ability to cool efficiently if the rad is fine you can confirm a head gasket gone water way to cylinder by doing a block test its where you have a little cylinder filled with a liquid that changes colour when CO is detected in the cooling system (exhaust gasses) is placed in the filler neck on the engine any local garge should be able to perform this test.

I had an astra sri which was whistling. It turned out to be water pump. I'm guessing fitting the new pump cured the whitsling problem you had (as well as the overheating!)
