Manual Gearbox oil

I had a quick search and could only find info on the tip tronic box,

mayb sum1 can point me in the direction of thread or help me out,

I want to change the gearbox oil tomorrow and am wondering what i need and the best oil to get?, can they be flushed also to get any crap out?

Finers, I recently bought Castrol SMX S 75w-85 Fully Synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid-3 x 1 Litres, you'll need about 2.2 litres for a full change.

Bought it from opieoils and comes recommended.

Do-able but messy. If possible, get yourself an oil syringe or fabricate a hose / funnel to allow you fill up from above.

thanks CJ, i reckon maybe tieing a hose onto the oil bottle have it suspended above and will clamp the end until its ready to fill.

Note used gear oil stinks like nothing else I've ever come across before and lingers forever. Try not to spill the stuff on yourself!

Most gear oil come with a retractable hose/nipple about 4 to 5 inches long. This is more than enough for the job.
This is not a difficut job. You'll need spanners or a socket set for the filler and drain plugs. As always ensure you can open the filler plug before the drain plug. No point draining out all the oil only to find you can't open the filler plug. If IIRC you don't even need to jack up the car (I could be wrong though as it's a while since I've done it.) You'll obviously need a container for the oil to drain into. No need for special hoses or any of that craic.

Cheers Mustang nd CJ, yup just in from doing it there!! had to pick a day there was a blizzard , Ye i made sure it came with an extendible nozzle it was the biz alot of them didnt come with it!! so goina keep the cap for future use,

I used 75w-90 GL-4/5 Full synthetic, hope thats decend stuff?

Ok done the Gearbox / Diff oil couldnt believe the difference!!!!!,

get this on full lock for the past few months the car was making a strange sound not very pleasant at all!!, sometimes the steering would be a bit jerky!! When i was getting the wishbone done had it down to paul Nolan took it for a day and couldn't figure it but said not to worry,

It was more annoying then anything, no1 could diagnose the problem, after the oil change its gone!!! car is whisper quit when turning on full lock no fight back on the steering im soooooo happy, i had people diagnosing the CV's the steering rack etc... no it was due to the old oil in the box!!,

Oil was pitch black, didnt actually smell CJ smelt sweet if anything.

So a bit of TLC really pays off in the end, going to do a radiator flush soon.

Mad that it didn't this stuff usually smells like a thousand rotting animals.

I'm of the opinion that even used motor has a bit of a funky smell.

Maybe you had syrup in there instead.. that would explain the strange problems as well..

Haha!! ye was expecting the worse was well prepped with gloves nd all ,

Came out nd i ws like right maybe my smell is dodgy:D, ye smelt grand kinda sweet, cant believe it was messin up the LSD in the car!! its actaully like drivin a new car now!! specialy cornering, did a bit of googlin and have heard a few cases were people have gotten CV's changed nd the lot nd is was all down to the oil!!!, wudnt blame Paul Nolan for not diagnosing it another friend of mine cudnt figure it either, hope any1 experiencing any funky problems with there steering try the oil first:D

I am actually having difficulty loosening the filler plug. I have tried wD40 and a hammer to shock the bolt loose with no joy.

The only thing I could think of was that I tried all this about 30 mins after a 2hr drive.

Would heat be an issue when loosening this bolt? Its too dark in the evenings to do anything at the minute!

Yes heat is ur friend i use a blow torch on some stubborn bolts but i would not advice it on this one as its in the engine bay and around oil!!,

What i did was get a handle extension and from a kneeling position reach under and grab the end and used my feet also, sorted it;).

If you don't have an extension get a hollow bar or whatever will extend the length of the wrench.

I got it off with a bit more leverage! Didn't have enough time to drain and refill though. Just topped it up a little.

The manual says "Hypoid gear oil SAE 75W - 90 or 75W - 85W conforming to API GL-4"

The only oil I could find local was EP 75w/90 Semi-Synthetic API GL-5

Is this ok?

I'd be inclined to use a fully synth oil for longevity, that said, the oil you purchased should do the job just fine.

My gears are stiff and I have to force 1st and 2nd when the car is cold.

Just want to try replacing the oil first before I start looking at something else like replacing gear linkages

I'm having difficulty locating the drain plug!

I can see where it should be in the workshop manual but I dont want to undo the wrong bolt!

Should the bolt have something written on it like the filler does?

I found it!

There was a load of muck covering the drain plug

Now to drive and see if it makes a difference
