Update on Chip 'n stuff

Postby rsg » Fri Oct 08, 2004 12:17 am

Hi guys,

Went and got my exhaust done today, sounds amazing, Ferrari like. Was quite dissapointed when I got on the dyno before the conversion and pushed out a wopping 70.3BHP at the wheels. Not very impressed at all.

But it started making sense when the mech explained alttitude and fuel octane, as well as me being convinced that something else is wrong and the dyno proving this.

Now, my mechanic has been over in Japan and done courses on the FTO & GTO along with other JAP cars and this carage specialises in them, so I will take his word for it on what he says, but please feel free to object at any time.

By changing the some settings on the dyno, he simulated my car at sea level, and I got approxamitely 120BHP at the wheels. After getting my exhaust put on, we did another run on the dyno, and I pushed out 80.5BHP, that's over 10BHP extra and all I did was add a free flow and de-cat. I was quite happy with that, but not completely. Got him to check the Lambda Sensor and turns out it's busted, and these were my suspicions all along. Damn!

Now, as I've mentioned before, he was able to add an extra 20BHP on the wheels of another FTO, almost guaranteeing the same for me. After speaking to him about this today, he says that the chip removes the rev limiter and replaces the lambda sensor as well as giving you the ability to adjust valves and so on, so this could work out really well for me, considering a Lambda Sensor cost about 380UK sterling, when I can get the chip for about 160UK sterling here, fitted and dyno'd. I guess we'll have to see what happens when I do it, worth a try.

Anyways, now that I don't have a CAT or a Lambda Sensor, he recommended I run 100 Leaded petrol, reckons all the other FTO's he's done work perfectly on that, so expecting some performance increases from there as well.

Sorry for my long ramblings, I just had a blow out on my tyre on the way home and I'm just a bit pissed off. Any comments welcome.

Thanks

rsg, those bhp figures are pretty low, I can only assume its a GS you're driving!
Can you let us know what brand of exhaust you used, and (more importantly) what aftermarket chip you are referring to?

It's actually a GR! What sort of figures could you estimate over there? The exhaust was a TNT and they removed the cathode, not sure of the make of chip yet though, will have to find out for you.

The figures are low because of the alttitude and my Lambda, but I'm still wondering if something else isn't wrong.

rsg, check out this post, there are two sets of manual GR figures included from a session last February. No Tip figures were included due to dyno limitations at the time.
