Regassing aircon

Postby soc » Thu Jun 23, 2005 2:11 pm

I think I need my aircon/climate control regassed - I was going to ring Autoair - had a look at their website and notice they have mobile units. Anyone used them before and had a mobile unit call out? How much am I looking at for a service and regas?

Regassed... what does that do for ya?

my aircon is actually brutal, it seems to still be blowing out hot air at the lowest setting - is it meant to only go down to 17°?

and most importantly - will this regassing business fix this for me? (i didnt really notice this until recently with the swelthering heat..)

I'm not sure if this is a cure for you neil but mind did that once before, and i went away when i fitted the small pipe at the back of the air-con control unit, not 100% sure what this pipe is supposed to do maybe sense cabin air temp or something but it seamed to do the trick for me... again i'm not sure if it will cure your problem but no harm it checking it hasn't come off

I think air con units need to be serviced over time (every few years) and regassing is necessary to ensure cold air can be blown - one of the guys on uk-mkivs.net had the aircon in his golf regassed and he said it was like a fridge after.... I think I'll give autoair a call.

Let us know how you get on Shane, I have the exact same problem as Neil. With the odd summer day roasting me in the car, I might get the gas refilled, air con heats the car if anything right now.
Silly question, can you check the level of air con stuff you have?
Is it actually gas or a liquid coolant mixes with air?

I know servicing can be expensive if they to the anti bacterial cleaning an all....would be nice if I just needed the gas

To check the level you're supposed to be able to look through the little glass window on the air con bottle (silver bottle behind battery). If you turn it on and look through the little window you can get some indication. A few bubbles and its fine, lots of bubbles its low and no bubbles its gone, I think anyway.

Guys, check the condenser as kev said, if it checks out alright then the temp sensor pipe may be loose at the side of the aircom ECU as per Daz's suggestion. You need to remove the centre console to check it, the pipe is connected to the small vent beside the temperature adjustment button and it can come loose quite easily.
If its cnot connected, the aircon won't operate correctly.

I must have a look at this on the golf tonight. I think I probably just need to get it regassed though.
