Disk changer problems

Postby CJ » Thu Oct 14, 2004 3:50 pm

I've an old JVC 12 disk changer in the boot and its started acting up of late - when you select a CD on the (JVC) headunit, it has a tendancy to do nothing, you can hear the disk being loaded but thats it. If I change to another disk, it might or might not work but I can eventually get something out it after 2 or 3 disk change attempts. I used a CD lens cleaner on it so I doubt its a read problem, I reckon that the internal mechanism might be getting stuck something along the line. Has anyone opened one of these lads up from a service perspective? Worst case scenario is I buy a second hand one off ebay but I'll probably have a go at opening the thing up (and messing it up further!) beforehand.

I'd like to know this myself - similar problem with mine.
The 6 CD in the armrest works fine but the additional 6CD in the boot seems to have the same symptoms as yourself.

I'd say the knocking it gets in the back can't help much - theres power going to the unit - it makes noise as if to play - but it doesn't register on the head unit.

Not a solution, but a suggestion

Get rid of the CD changers and get a MP3 capable Cd /Radio for the dash.

I have a kenwood from Argos, €200, and it is brilliant - I can get 10 albums on a cd (with relatively decent compression) and I don't have the hassle of filling the CD changer.

If you have an I-Pod, get one of the transmitters for it and you can have access to several gigabytes of music.

Personally, I had one a few years ago in the GS, it worked great.
I have a Creative Zen in the car that I hook into the line in on the head unit but I would prefer to not have cables coming out of the front of the unit (I know you can get an FW transmitter, but I'm not a fan of going down the D-to-A route at the player level, especially after spending a few quid on good quality amps and speakers). I might just shell out a few extra quid and buy an MP3 compatible CD changer in instead, the problem will be matching it up with the 1½ year old head unit. Decisions, Decisions!

Have an iPod, but I'm told that the FM transmitters don't work too well. Never tried one myself, has anyone here?

Did see an article Apple did titled something like 'iPod your BMW', you could have your iPod sitting in the glovebox, and you can control it via the standard radio controls on the steering wheel like a cd changer so never need to touch it. Even the tune names come up on the display.

There's another product around, iChanger I think its called, that gives you this, lets you use your iPod as a CD changer, hooks into the CD changer port on your radio (can't use this AND the cd changer though, one or the other). Sounded good, $182 I think it was.

Just out of curiousity, how do you use 2 cd changers?? Got a head unit that takes 2 changer connections?

Just curious, have a Sony XR-CA600 head and a 10 CD changer which I'm happy out with but the 2 cd changes bit caught my eye... :o

Its a Pioneer system - has a separate TV unit - good amp - & Sat nav (yet to get software) - good sound - I have yet to hear a good sounding MP3 system - my mate has one he spent several grand on and it sounds poo.

It came on the car from Japan (amazingly not getting robbed in process) - but its a few years old - haven't taken it apart yet as I know little about ICE - and the working 6 CD changer has suited me fine - so I don't know how it manages 2 CD changers - its not clear from looking at the AMP under the seat and I haven't pulled out the stereo yet - I'm gonna need someone in the know to take a look to get it sorted - My TV reception is also bad despite the two aerials stuck on the back window.

As I prefer leaving the window down and listening to my "Mivec" tunes - especially like the ITG and RSR exhaust version of this particular tune  - I haven't really been concerned with sorting the sound

OK I have a been on holidays and out very ill for the past while so sorry for not replying to all the mails I have received.

Anyway CJ youur changer is in the boot, you wouldn't by any chance have had stuff moving around in the boot. The reason I ask is that I have seen several changers where the connection on the changer where the cable plugs in has come loose from the circuit board. Solder joints have broken away. I would suggest you get someone to move the connection while you select CD on the head unit.

Maybe disconnect, remove and try with somebody else's head unit. Maybe a Pioneer dealer will let you try it with one of their head units.
