DOHC Vrs Mivec

Postby ftodreamer » Sun May 14, 2006 10:51 pm

Is there really a big difference in the drive between the regular fto dohc and an fto mivec engine? I've not driven a mivec engined fto before so I'm not sure what to expect.

Is it true that with the mivec you can adjust the tappets but not with the dohc? Are there disadvantages to the mivec engine?

Sorry for all the questions, you've probably answered all these before.

With GPX (not sure if its just Mivec or non Mivec too) you can adjust the tappets, but with GR & GX you can't.

Disadvantages of Mivec, not much, some would argue that they would be a little less reliable than the non-Mivec but having said that it would only be very marginal. Both are very solid.

if u got a little need for speed then the mivec is a must, the non-mivec is not that quick, iv got a mivec lancer, 1.6, and iv driven a fto non mivec, my lancer is slightly quicker, so imo a great lookin car like the fto should have the performance to go along with it

Johnny, are you comparing the Lancer to a GS (1.8 ) or the GR (2.0V6)?
The Mivec engined V6's are quicker that the non-Mivec V6's at the top end, this is where the Mivec comes into its own. Apart from that, the difference in terms of straighline speed and acceleration is marginal, I wouldn't be using the phrase 'not that quick' to describe a GR or GX

i probably should have mentioned that iv spent a few grand upgrading my mivec lancer, and yes i dont think a 2ltrv6 fto is that quick, sure its quicker than my dads station wagon, but my definition of quick is 0-60 in under 6secs

Well if thats the case, then the FTO is probably not for you, you won't get sub 6 second 0-60 runs in an FTO without serious modifications.

Guess we won't be seeing much of you on this forum then in future.

Are you pushing sub 7 second times out of your normally aspirated Lancer Mivec ?

I'm curious - are you hitting sub 6secs 0-60 in your fwd mivec lancer? It must have some serious work done to it...

On another note - as CJ already mentioned - mivec only comes into it's own at higher speeds so it makes v. little difference to 0-60 times

Guess we won't be seeing much of you on this forum then in future.

I beg to differ on the 0-60 difference between the gr and gpvr.... I went up against Agent S at the lights a couple of times and its around 4 car lengths 0-60 and she's a better driver than me i'm sad to say!!! :)

Just to add to that arguement my Manual GPX's 0-60 was timed at 6.48 sec on a dusty track at the last 1/4 mile - don't think a GR or a 1.6 mivec will get anywhere near that TBH.

gfalls wrote:what was the 1/4 mile time?

15.037 - not bad considering the very dusty track - would expect late 14's with better traction. There was a couple of Integra Type R's I ran against in my class and it was nip and tuck for the 1/4 mile and 0-60 times - I ended up within .1 sec of the quicker Type R and was .1 sec faster than the other - the Type R's lower gear ratios really help - they are well into 4th gear at the end of the 1/4 mile while I'm still in 3rd. The 15inch rims on the faster Type R def helped as well. 17's are just too big for 1/4 mile sprints.

Of the other "road cars" - Civic type R's were a good bit slower - the lancer GSR was putting in really similar times and a TRD celica was about .7sec off my fastest time.

BTW - the 1/4 mile is 402metres - saying that you "live 402metres at a time" doesn't have the same ring to it.
