Auto Box and Idle question

Postby Lindsay » Mon Aug 04, 2008 7:20 pm

Hi Guys,

I have tried using the search function and could not find the exact answer to my question and I was hoping you could help me. (I will try not to be too much of a pain!)

I have a 96 GR auto and my idle, I believe from what I have read is correct. Cold start it is about 1,100rpm and once warm it is about 750rpm.

On first start up and into drive from park the car is fine (i.e in the morning) , however, if I stop say for petrol or park up (no matter how long left for) and I start the car and go into drive straight away the car revs drop right down to about 300rpm and sometimes just stalls straight away. If I leave the car from start up in park for about 1 minute and then into drive it seems to be ok.

Sorry for the long post - if I have complicated the question please let me know (I am not too good at explaining things)

P.S - other than the above the idle seems fine - never 'hunts' or plays up - only on selection to drive or reverse from park or neutral.

Hmmm i have heard the stepper motor is normally the problem when it comes to rough / erratic idlling. IThey say its a 15min job to take out and clean, give it a try :?:

Info about the stepper motor http://www.fto-ireland.com/forum/phpBB2 ... ht=stepper

Yeah sounds like the stepper motor to me also..

How does the car behave if you stop at the lights when the engine is warm?

Clean the stepper.

It is an easy job. Just use a non fluffy cloth.

Many Thanks for the replys!!! I shall give the stepper motor a clean on the weekend and see how that goes!

Muad_dib77 - she seems to idle fine at traffics lights etc - I would say sometimes on complete stop it will go down to about 500rpm - but never any lower than that and never has erratic idling - i.e up and down.

Could it do with the idle to be set a little higher? is that quite easy to do?

Also could it do with a reset to learn my driving style - as this has not been done since I purchased it.

Many Thanks once again for your help!

A reset can't hurt that's for sure..

Have you had a full service done since you got her?

Plugs, Filters & Fluids? Better safe than sorry ;-)

As far as I know there is an idle speed adjuster screw on the throttle body - but I wouldn't go fiddling with it before trying the other things 1st.
