Speedo and ignition

I have a couple of small niggles with my FTO and I wonder if you guys might be able to shed some light on them.

Firstly my speedo and odometer are in miles because my car did a stint in the UK. It's still got the original kp/h dials, but the k is blacked out and the needle moves slower to make it display miles. Any idea how I'd go about switching it back to kilometers? Curiously it passed the NCT like that.

Secondly the car is a bit odd starting up from cold. It always takes five to ten seconds of turning the starter to get it going. Unless it's warm when it will start up instantly. It never, ever FAILS to start, it just takes its time. Usually if I turn it over for a second, stop and then go again it'll start instantly the second time. Any ideas?

If the starter is sturning the starter itself is probably ok..

I'd get the car serviced straight away.

Plugs, Filters, Oil, Belts - if the timingbelt was changed recently it's generally alright.. but the peace of mind servicing the car will give you far outweighs the cost.

I imagine you're experiencing ye old stepper motor problem.
Do a search under "stepper motor" and you'll see how to resolve.

As for MPH readout - There may have been a delimiter chip fitted to the back of your dials - this would delimit the car and give readout in MPH - just disconnect and it should go back to normal - is you odometer reading in Miles or KMs?
