Air Flow - 97GR

Postby Dave » Tue Dec 06, 2005 5:14 pm

Folks,
Marc, a friend of mine was having some trouble with his 97 GR, basically it's been loosing power, start it up it would rev for a few seconds and cut out, he's felt it loose power whilst driving and generally it feels crap.
He brought it to a mitsi to get it MUTII'd and they reckon it's the air flow sensor!

question is, can this be cleaned or will it have to be replaced?

He's fitted an ITG but it was my old one and i doubt it's be cleaned, would this have an affect?

Also, would a pre 97 air flow sensor (MAS or MAF, can't remember) fit his, i'm think Helen seeing that she has a few spares floating around.

Dave,
Mark has a GX no? I plugged teh chassis no. of my old GR into caps and it gives a part no. for the "sensor, air cleaner, air flow" is MD189575.
I'm not familiar with the part myself. In general these things can be cleaned, they are quite sensitive so be careful. Afre time it is inevitable that a certain amount of dirt gets through the filter/ piping, and dirties the MAF. Cleaning it may work, this would be my starting point. Otherwise you will have to replace it. If any large or solid debris has impacted the unit it may be damaged in which case cleaning it won't help.

sorry it is a GX, but it's the same as the GR MAF i would have thought?

i've to pull the MAF and have a look at it for him to see if it's just dirt and what not!!

Perhaps! But I wouldn't make that assumption. FYI the part no for a GS MAF is MD172449 (so that rules out Using bits from Helen's car  ).

Like I say I'm not familiar with this particular unit but in general these things are very delicate, and very sensitive The sensor itself will be a small electrical device mounted within the 'pipe section' you should use alcohol to clean it.

hmm maybe so, i've let him off to ring Ricerocket and Camskill, i might change mine over and see if that makes any difference, only after i give it a clean, i'll get him to clean the induction kit in the mean time....

i think also that the fitting is different than 95 and 96s. I tried taking one off a 99 GR and the fitting is different again.
