Tappet noise.

Postby Dean » Fri Dec 23, 2005 2:05 pm

Just to verify, to make sure it is the tappet problem I am having.

Is it sort of a clackity-clackity-clackity noise when the accelerator is pressed?
If I rev significantly when I start the car it fades out, but occasionally comes back while driving.
Its louder when it is cold.

Is this most likely tappets? I have had it for a while, but always assumed the tappets.

Sounds like tappets alright, join the club!
What model do you have, if its a GPX you can adjust them.
Try Forte Top End (Camskill have it) with an Oil and Filter change, that should help.
Once the oil is warm the noise should go.
Dont rev too hard to get the temperature up, be nice to the engine until its at running temperature

My tappets were really bad (lasted up to 5 mins) til I did an oil change and added in the Forte Top End, now the noise is there on start up for 10 seconds max.

It sounds like the tappets alright, but its never come back once the car has warmed up... how's your oil level?

Forte top end quietened mine for a while too, although I'm due an oil change over Christmas so hopefully that'll help it again.

Oil is topped up, it comes back at random times during driving, and there is always a quieter version of it at all times.

given the time of year , i'd blame it on the elves. :) Happy Chrimbo!!
You know, somebody actually complimented me on my driving today. They left a little note on the windscreen, it said 'Parking Fine'.

Tappets

Postby IrishLad » Thu Jan 05, 2006 5:54 pm

It is the tappets as my oldder FTO kept doing it even after warming up. I ended up taking the rocker covers off and removing the tappets one by one and cleaning them. It turned out they where nearly seezed. If was hard to move them even in the vice.

My advice is take a Sunday for the car, get the tappets out and clean them using the guides found on various sites. It takes a whole day to do it right but its not as hard as it looks either.

Once there clean the car sounds likes it gonna explode for the first few miles then its quiet. Now every morning I have the tappets sound for about 5-6secs then its quiet just the exhaust note.

Before you do take it on I suggest running engine cleaner through your oil just to collect and remove any dirty sitting in the bay. Let it cool and do your tappets, outr it all back and slight over fill (very slightly) with Magnatec 10w40 oil as I found it to be the best.

Goodluck.
