Autoguard? Never heard of them. Personally, I wouldn't waste my money putting budget tyres on a performance car like the FTO.

Budget tyres fall short in the wet and during emergency breaking, they also tend to produce more road noise. My comments had nothing to do with driving fast - safety first.

they have identical thread as my old federals, and they where pretty good in the wet, as for road noise i will soon find out when i get her on the motorway. all i can hear all the time is the roar of my exhaust :D

Better off sticking with Federals then - far superior tyre IMO - Camskill sell these for about €48 each - http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php? ... b0s15p7693

Or for similar money to what you paid for a very basic tyre IMO - you could have had a good performance tyre like a Toyo T1-R - http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php? ... b0s15p1686

All have similar patterns but IMO where the Toyo T1-R is a 9/10 for performance, the Federal would be 6/10 and I wouldn't like to estimate where the Autoguard comes in.

As per CJ - why buy a sports car and then skimp on the only thing actually touching the road?

Tyres make such a difference, especially i you don't have ABS. I got Toyo Proxes delivered for around 80 each, and the grip is massive. Autogard (and Federal for that matter) is a budget brand and nowhere near as grippy.
But if you're not going to be driving the car aggressively or fast then fair enough.

I'm surprised no GR owners have picked up on this comment! GR, GS, GPX, Micra whatever - tyres are the only thing that connect you and your cars occupants to the road. The point that we're trying to make is its a false ecomony to put budget tyres on any car both in terms of safety and performance.

By the way, try not to take comments too personally, opinions tend to get expressed on public forums!

Oh we've picked up on it all right :smt011 A few comments about tip gearboxes is all we're short of now :k

Back to tyres... I've got Nanking Ultra Sport NS-II 205/50/16. I find them good in the wet, if a little loud. They were on the car when I got it.

Anyone know anything about these? How do they rate in general?

They're supposed to be a noisy tyre alright, was looking at them a few months back and read some reviews.

I have to agree with CJ here.

The Nankangs are right up there with the Autoguards in terms of a quality performance tyre. :P

I guess it all comes down to what you want in a tyre - if you want a budget tyre and don't tend to push on when driving then perhaps a budget tyre is ok (Nankangs/Champiros etc) - for anyone who likes their FTO to resist understeer and grip well as well as inspire confidence when wet/hard cornering etc then they are better off going with a good performance tyre (Pereli PZero/Goodyear F1 Eagle/Toyo T1-R/Bridgestone RE050 Potenza/ Michelin Pilot Sport etc). There are plenty of middle of the road tyres that will do a good job as well inc Federal Super Steel / Avon ZZ3 / Falken FK452 / Kumho Ecsta Sport etc and these can be got at a very reasonable price.

What I really hate seeing is tyre and car dealers putting crap tyres on cars and then charging top dollar because they know the person buying the tyres hasn't a clue about whats going on the car. When my missus' Alfa went in for service to her local main dealer last year they rang her to say the car needed new tyres - She told them she wanted a similar replacement for her F1 Eagles. When she arrived home with the car it had a set of Champiros on and a bill for €145 each per tyre  - needless to say it wasn't long been sent back to the dealership for a set of F1 Eagles at the same rate (still overcharging IMO) and a few choice words exchanged with the service manager.

Thanks for the info, though not particularly what I wanted to hear :(

Must admit to being a bit ignorant regarding tyres. The Nankings were fitted by a mate of mine who owned the car before me. I think he paid dear for them... around €120 per corner

yeah 120 sounds a bit dear baldrick,
but i myself was ignorant to the fact that tyres with heafty price must be good, granted i got mine cheap but reduced, and still noname brand. but to a post recently i must agree with the fact that garages charge dear for tyres and put on budjet brands,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,ah well i know now so next time f1's or perelli's. cant beat the knowledge on the forum

I concur. I naively got a set with a wheel and tyre package when I had the GS, I had them removed within a month due to the non-existant grip. I was coming off a roundabout one day and the GS went into a four wheel drift, the Nankangs took ages to regain grip. Granted the road was damp but I wasn't pushing it. They are without doubt the worst tyre I've come across, they're noisy as hell, are made from a very hard compound and shouldn't be put anywhere near an FTO. Sorry Paddy!

No apology needed... thanks for the info. Must admit I find them grippy enough in the dry. Haven't pushed them much in the wet though... long time biker and therefore have huge 'respect' for wet roads. Currently looking for somewhere to burn them off the rims  Certainly won't be replacing like for like.

Same here, got them to try them out and wasn't impressed with the results. Sure the only way you'll find these things out for yourself is by trying things out, and might even be pleasantly surprised every now and again.

I guess my point was that you can't compare the Autogaurds against the Federals anymore than you can compare the Federals against the high performance brigade (Pirelli PZero's/F1 Eagles/Toyo T1-R's etc).
