What cars from 1980s stick out in your mind? I'm talking about cars that you would see on Irish roads as opposed to TV and the like. For me, the Ford Granada 2.8 Ghia and Datsun 1200 come to mind (anyone remember them in brown!)

And before you say it, yes, I seen one out and about 2 weeks ago. Now that would be one quick way to get to work. You'd have to get the Mr. Fusion upgrade mind, you think the price of petrol has gone up, you should check out the price of that plutonium.

The TR7 (the old wedge shaped car - or was that the 70's :oops:

) and the Triumph Spitfire. My sister had a red Spitfire, I always thought it was wicked.

Ye, I remember them, my dad used to drive a Renault 16 :cry:

Again think it was more of a 70's car, but he drove it till it fell apart, well into the 90's

capri 2.8, springs to mind a friend used to race one of these, also fiat ritmo 130TC abrath, sierra cosworth, and does anyone remember the uno IE turbo?

For me the 80's was about cars like the Renault Feugo, Opel Manta and Monza, Renault Alpine, Alfasud, Alfa 75 and Sprint, The whale tail orig Cossie, the Audi Quattro, Citroen BX GTI 16v, Honda CRX, Mitsubishi Starion, Peugout 205 and 309 GTI, Toyota Celica etc

And of course the cars you read about but never got to see in the flesh - The Lotus Esprit,Testarossa, Countach - and the best car I've ever sat in during the 80's - the Porsche 959 - my ultimate 80's car. :twisted:

Ford Capri, Cortina & Granada
Saab 900 Turbo
VW Golf
Mitsubishi Galant (late '80s early '90s model)
Toyota celica (Mk 3 I think!)

Couldn't forget the massive rally success the Escort Mk II.
One of my personal favourites however is not from our shores - the 80-82 Corvette

Mazda 626 (1.6 4speed) (1983)
-- Long story short - not a good purchase!

Daihatsu Charade Hatch (1.0 3-cyl 5speed) (1988.)
-- Could outrun my friends Golf mk1 1.3 - Both in acceleration and TopSpeed -- Had loads of fun in the little banger... In the end though I got caught out by some black ice and went straight through t-junction..that was pretty much the death of the "Die-Hard-Su"... Sounded pretty funny, being a 3cyl and all.

Essentially both sucked - but they're stuck in my head...

Haven't thought of most of these cars in a long time... scrappage scheme saw the end of most of them.

For me it'd be Ford Cortinas, mostly 'cos we had a couple I guess, TR7, Granada, Magnum PI's Ferrari!

Ok I still can't see the acclaim. I was going to mention this one in my original thread as my folks had one for a number of years. However it's not a car I have any particular memories of either good, bad or indifferent.
Looking back as a teenager I thought this was a very poor choice of car (they bought it new), could have had a corolla or someting better........
As I recall the engine and running gear were by honda taken from the equivalent civic (anyone care to correct me on this?)

Dave do you have some affiliation with this particular car (in the photo)?
You may recall the recent FTO for sale in Newbridge -The red one with the white stripes down the side. (Daz suggested it might be one of your project cars). There seems to be a common theme...Red car, white stripes, Dave, Kildare area :idea:

Indeed it did make a very distinctive sound, you could always tell one coming before you actually saw it
