all you have to do is get a MAF adaptor if you wanna use an aftermarket air filter

MAF = Mass Air Flow (Air Mass meter, Mass airflow meter, there are a few names for them) The detect how much air is coming into the intake before it gets there so the ECU can provide the right mixture of fuel (14.7:1 air:fuel). If you remove it the ECU doesn't know what to provide and goes to a default plan or sometimes not a default one and the fuelling is all over the place leading to bad running, bad mileage and it eventually no power.

I was doing something before, think it was changing the spark plugs, which involved removing the air intake to move the inlet manifold, and forgot to reconnect the MAF before starting the car. It would start and then cut out straight away. Was worried I was after doing something stoopid until I spotted I hadn't reconnected the MAF!

you usually get different diameter adaptors with aftermarket air filter kits to fit onto your end pipe or in this case the end of your MAF adaptor

It's likely to be a waste of time either way. a cheap induction filter setup will most likely decrease bhp.

Give me a performance panel filter any day

Can't see the point in putting it on for the sake of it if it's not gonna have any benefit. Maybe I'm getting old but that makes no sense to me.

Cause they look nicer than the filter box I reckon. I have a cone filter, (I presume its a cone filter ye're on about, finding it very hard to follow this post as the quoting isn't showing up properly or something), and maybe it does nothing for hp, but like I explained before I'm into the aesthetics and not so much the whole 'my car is faster than yours' thing. It also ads a bit of a throaty noise to the engine note.
End of the day if you want to fit something to your engine stewyd then go ahead and do it. But like Colm said, it won't add power, but my own personal opinion is that it does look nicer in the bay than the box.

Re: Air filter

If it's any help, I just bought an ITG filter and will be selling an Apexi soon.
It's from a GPX so I don't know if you'd be able to get it to fit with a MAF in place (anyone?)

It's the same as this one and you can have it for a donation to the site.

You will need a MAF adaptor which i can get cheap on ebay for 7 pound stirling.

Another member has offered me an air filter last night which i'll take when he gets back to me.
But thanks anway bernard and when i get enough money together i'll make a donation anyway :D
