Exhaust query

Postby Jay_TLR » Sun Feb 18, 2007 1:38 am

My gf is having a problem with her exhaust on her 97 FTO GX. The mid pipe had a hole in it and was replaced last week. It ran great for a few days but then started to sound funny. A bit like Paverotti blowing through a long Wavin pipe. The back box had been patched in Japan with one of those big aluminium stickers. I think what might have happened is when the mid pipe was replaced and normal back pressure was sent through the back box it blew a hole through where it was patched. It's getting louder by the day, I think Paverotti is building up to a big solo. There's very little pressure coming through the exhaust tips and also while the car is louder now it's not that horrible deafening noise you get when there's a hole before the silencer. Hopefully I'll be able to get under the car tomorrow if it's dry and see if the hole is visible.

The problem is I'm a biker not a car person so I've no idea what way the exhaust is put together. How many pieces are there? What should I look for?

If the back box needs to be replaced I'll want to source a standard replacement as the car does alot of milage and I don't want to feck with the fuel economy by sticking something fruity on it. Are standard back box's easy to find second-hand and are they expensive? Thanks for any help you guys can give.

Jay, there will be plenty of ppl that will sell you a stock rear box cheap, as ppl usually replace the exhaust system from the cat back, with a performance system once the middle pipe goes due to its replacement cost (mitsu only)
