Hey
Just thought would introduce myself. 22, 2nd provisional, 1 year driving mits mirage couple version on my own insurance and hoping to upgrade to an FTO in the future (full licence test soon enough hopefully). Never realised how many different types there are and such! Lot of research to be done i think! Anyways always wanted an FTO, even tho will be sad to let my mirage go :P AM sure i will be asking many questions over time

Welcome to the forum - if you are looking at any particular FTO's - post the link to the car on here and we can offer advice accordingly.

Ask the questions before you buy the FTO and you won't go far wrong.

Welcome to the board kwalsh,

Good luck with the test :-) - you're right there are a few different FTO versions to pick from, but once you get your head around them it's not so difficult to pick..

There's a model guide on the main page - have a good look around on the board as well - or if in doubt, just ask :-)

Agreed, DO it, don't just plan to do it. ;)

I got my FTO right after I passed my test at 21 (a few months back) and I haven't looked back. It's the most pleasurable car I've ever driven and looks fantastic.

No other car will give you as much for as cheap.

Mine is for sale (its not listed anywhere but here yet though), its a 1997 2.0V6 GR Pre-Facelift, if you can get insurance on one of those send me a PM.
As long as you dont need it for 2 weeks or so, theres a blueflame exhaust to go on and a cambelt change in the works.

They will not touch you for insurance without a full license so I hope your test is soon. I had to take my girlfriend off my insurance as she was a named driver with a provisional and they wouldn't allow her drive the FTO!

Cheers everyone. Il send you a PM dean.

Ah manual all the way for sure! As for the licence, got my confirmation letter on tuesday after booking on sunday on the internet. I'll be getting a letter to state i need it for my job aswell which will speed up the test significantly. Have been looking around at a few, will have to post a few links when i see one i like. Ive aso been thinking about getting one imported. A friend i have not seen in ages just told me the other week that he is importing jap cars and selling on, so no harm in having a chat with him.

I looked at the import guide on the site..am in two minds..

I will say, dont be too stressed at the reaction you get from insurance companies, I only just managed to get insurance at 24 for a GS and it was €4500.
They will give you a very hard time. You may have better luck with a GS, but maybe not.

Obviously a bit more than its worth eh?
was looking at http://www.carzone.ie/usedcars/index.cf ... rID=810302

But 100,000 miles?

Still this one is tempting..

I'd go for the GPX, don't worry about the mileage, I've 100K on mine and no trouble yet (knocks on wood).
Just make sure it's fully serviced, plugs, belts and filters.

Hi,

Just to point out the FTO you mentioned above with 100K miles is my car and is listed in the for sale section on the site. It has indeed been fully serviced by Paul Nolan who anyone on this site will recommend as a top notch FTO mechanic. It has also had all of the wear and tear problems assiciated with the GPX sorted.

Here's a link to the ad with a description of all the work that has been done to the car and what's included in the purchase price.

http://www.fto-ireland.com/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5799

Still I guess if its not your style and you plan on doing some extreme modifying and spending a lot of cash then you are probably better off paying a bit extra and going for a younger lower mileage car with no mods as your base.

Cheers,
Paul

Ah cheers for the link. A friend of a friend who imports jap cars is comin over later and we are going to discuss a few things. I have to say Paul, you car looks amazing as is..im kind of partial to the other silver but as is its a great looking car but 10,000 might be a bit out of my budget for the moment esp if you are leaving soon.

As for mod's the only thing I would do is add the standard spoiler back on it, am not really into the modding thing bar big tyres. So many choices..ill really have to sit down and work out funds and what i can get for my motor. Again great looking FTO...too..tempted!

If you're interested you'd be foolish not to go and see it...
