Postby paul2508 » Wed Mar 05, 2008 9:40 pm

hey people, can you please please help me. only since yesterday my car has been cutting out and has irregular revs too. im thinking could it be the stepper motor. the revs are going up and down on its own. then suddenly drops jus below 1000 revs or else cuts out. hope its not too serious. thanks peeps

Probably the stepper motor. Does it only happen at idle?

Sounds like the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) is acting up, has any work been done in and around the throttle body recently? Note that a dodgy stepper will only manifest itself when the engine is cold. Suggest you undertake a diagnostic:

Not difficult at all - do a search for stepper motor and you should find the guide.

Disconnet the negative terminal from the battery for 10 mins.

You never mentioned if the problem occurs when the engine is hot or cold. If its from cold only, its the stepper, if its from hot and cold it could be the TPS.

Had a similar problem myself and it was two months before i found out what it was.
Q. does the engine management light come on before it cuts out.
Q. is it hard to start for about 2 or 3 mins after it cuts out.
Q. does it cut out only on a rough or uneven surface or if you hit a bump.
Q. when its hunting does it stop if you restart the car.

If its yes to the questions i would suggest fiddiling with the M.A.F or vaccum sensor on the bulkhead behind the engine (little black box with rubber tube coming from it) and see if your revs rise and fall or even cut out.
That was the problem with my mivec it wrecked my head for months till one day i found it by accident.
You can pick one up off fleabay for around £30 also check the wiring going to it for breaks etc
Good luck

i have no problem starting it back up when it cuts out, the engine management light doesnt come on only the battery light. when im idle its stays in around the the 2000rpm to 2500rpm then it hunts now and again. mostly when its warm
