Apple I phone

Postby d_dan » Thu Feb 28, 2008 11:28 pm

ok guys bla di bla....
I phone released in ireland today!
will only be available on bill pay
from O2 retail stores and CARPHONE WAREHOUSE.

much cheaper than the anticipated price of around 750 euro

they are going for 399 (8gb) and 499 (16gb)
all in all not a bad price now personally i dont like it iv had one for 3 days now in work and im not impressed!

but hey.... for only 100 euro more than the i touch if your looking for a new mp3 player and would consider a new phone this is the way to go!

the phone is only available on bill pay with o2 and is built to the apple unlockable spec (in otherwords can be unlocked but when the phone connects to the internet via wifi it will lock down...)

the phone is on sale from 14th March... usually with 100 euro deposit but using staff discount i can hold off the deposit for anyone from the club who wants one....

the reason meteor dosnt have alot of hte high end phones...

Blackberrys, nokias, iphone

is that they dont have an active 3g network so the phones that use 3g (the high end phones) wont function properly....

now last april meteor aquired a 3g licence and have been working on it (for limited subscribers eg. head honchos) 3g coverage is available in dublin for trials.

to date meteor now have about 50% 3g coverage setup around the country....

the reason they are not releasing it is that is you go back to when meteor came out originally they started off with coverage in the cities and then expanded, they got terrable press over this for having such poor reception around the country and in hte 8 years that meter have been in the country they have built up a large customer number and dosnt want to loose them by half ass doing things.

but as far as i know were expecting it mid-end of this year.

ps.
o2 will always take on any handset that uses alot of data transfer.

i phone (music downloads)
N 95 (sat nav)
blackberry (web and e-mair data transfer)

is that they have the most advanced network so that no matter where you are your handset has as clost to broadband speeds,

o2 have ;

2G
EDGE (2.5G)
3G
HSDPA
WLAN

vodafone;

2G
3G
HSDPA (only in dublin, no no their broadband models are crap outside dublin)

3 ireland;

3G
HSDPA

Meteor
2G
*3G (setup but not active)

cheers dan, I knew they were going 3g, I actually thought it was going to be sooner, as in March - April and we'd see a decent influx of high end phones, I got an upgrade recently with Meteor and the selection is truely abismal, the only saving grace for them is how cheap I find them, I've the the free calls and texts for life to meteor customers so it suits me down to the ground....

I'm interested in an iphone - tell me more - what data packages are available? I'm currently with Vodafone and have a bit to run out on my contract - not sure how much but I should find out.

Emmm... the iPhone doesn't do 3G.... :? maybe a future version.

What I heard was that O2 have a contract with Apple for selling Apple products (O2 stores sell iMacs, ipods, etc), which is why O2 are the only ones that will be doing the iPhone, for the near future at least.

On the upside, with the iPhone being available officially hopefully the ebay prices will come down a bit!

As far as I have found out from a friend who unlocks these, they will not "re-lock" when connected via Wi-Fi.

They will lock up again if software updates are done.

Available on e-bay for $399 for 8gb

Would seriously advise anyone interested in buying a new phone to look up the phones on E-bay. My new phone should be here Thursday of Friday :D

Ya, I think an unlocked iphone off ebay for 400 quid and your normal tariff is a better sounding plan than paying O2 400 quid and being locked into a 100 euro a month contract for is it a year or 18 months.

I agree 100%, plus with O2 your downloads are capped to 1GB per month!

Gonna get one and use it on Vodafone n see how it goes!
