speedo, kilometers is miles

Postby lewisdale » Sun Feb 07, 2010 2:32 am

my speedo is weird on my car, but my kilometers seem to be working as mph and my mph as kilometers? why is it doing that and how do i rectify it? i have a feeling the speedo is a uk spec one as the miles are on the outside and km on the inside, surely the origional import clocks are opposite? im thinking its had a km to mph convertor of somekind put on the car and would have worked ok with import clocks but now there uk ones its working the opposite way around? any ideas suggestions? thanks

you have the standard speedo fitted which is in km, but you've got a face over the original dial that reads in miles?

What way is the odometer reading? is it going up in kms? as in you travel 1km, does it read 1km extra?

my speedo is a standard speedo, mph on the outside and km on the inside, the km part seems to be working in mph, and the mph is reading kmh, if thats any clearer?

The standard FTO speedo doesn't have MPH readings at all.

I can't seee how 60mph would read as 60kmph while at the same time 60kmph would read as 60mph.

I'm asking simply: If you traval 10 miles, how much does the total mileage showing on the odometer increase by.

What it looks like to me is your car was converted to MPH but the dials weren't changed (sometimes they just put a MPH sticker over the KMH).
A set of MPH dials (KMC or visual performance ect.) would sort you out.
I presume your odometer is ticking up in miles?

Yup, there's always a few on ebay.
Also on the FTOOC: http://www.fto-shop.com/dashboard-dress-up/carbon-el-dial-kit/prod_325.html
Visual performance: http://www.visual-performance.co.uk/#/fto/4534291528

Or KMC (if you can find them)
http://cars.gctranslations.co.uk/FTO_Dials.html

Be sure to check your odometer first though.

No, not if it's already been converted. Those dial kits are just that, dials only.

EDIT: It'd be no harm verifying your speed with a satvav first too.

The original dials read as far as 180KPH, the ones you liked to have MPH figures but read to 110MPH.
The dials I linked to read to 180MPH.

The best thing you can do is post a pic of your dials so we're sure.

ive come to the conclusion that MY clocks would work as they should if the car had no de limiter/speed convertor thing on it, i think im just going to buy a set of ones like this where the mph sits in the same place as where the kmh would origionally been
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Mitsubishi-FTO-Sp ... 1c0fc3646d
out of interest where would my de limiter be located, i want to take it off and see if the speedo works as it should, befor i buy the new clocks, thanks

I'm open to correction but AFAIK there are two types of delimiter, one goes on the gearbox and the other behind the dials.

One word of caution though, if you buy the whole unit (like the one in your last link) your mileage won't transfer.
It will still show the mileage from the donor car.
