Nice job Seb, you happy with them? I really think that the FTO benefits significantly from a seet of HIDs - theres not point having a set of diffusion lens if you're not gonna stick HIDs behind them!

Lucky I didn't have to go through that. WD40 isn't an option as it's too far in. I'd suggest giving it a few licks of a hammer and swearing at it.

I don't think converting the full lights is a great idea.

Why not? I find the hi beams a bit inadequate at the best of times.

I was under the impression that turning HID systems on and off repeatedly is bad for them. a bit like flourescent lights. This would happen with full lights.

I have a spare set of ballasts so lets see how it works out. Worth a try

I reckon the bigger problem will be the heat buildup in the units from 2 sets of HIDs - I doubt that the FTO lense and plastic casing will be able for the heat generated - they barely seem able for the standard lights without bubbling and heat marks on the lense.

What is the situation with the stock HIDs that come with a GPVR ? Are these on both low and high beams ?

Not worth posting a new thread, but what do ye think of these:

http://cgi.ebay.ie/Xenon-HID-Conversion ... 286.c0.m14

€38.50 for postage and €11.40 for the actual kit makes €49.90, which is well cheap!

What I'm wondering is: If customs cop what they are, how much import duty do they charge you. The last set I got was marked as "GIFT". Is it 10% of the invoice price? do I have to pay VAT too?

I don't think there's any difference in the HID kits for this price and the dearer ones in the UK etc. none of them are big branded stuff.

EDIT: just ordered them regardless!

Ditto. Colm, if they're crap, I'm blaming you ;)

He's got mostly good feedback so fingers crossed. I went for the 4300k set for that OEM look - not exactly white, but not yellow either...

Ballasts and bulbs look exactly the same as the ones I ordered earlier in this post, have not had a problem with them yet.

Hard to believe how they could produce them so cheap even in China, and the postage from china can somtimes be faster than from Kerry to Dublin.

Yep, they look well on silver without looking too out of place. I went for the 4.3k, reckon they will suit the red better. Will report back on results.

CJ

here's 4.3k and 6k side by side

Reckon the 4.3 will look great as long as your lenses are nice and scratch free. must give mine a rub before the bulbs arrive!

did anyone find that the seal between the bulb and the headlight unit wasn't great? Will run a bead of silicone around mine this time just to be sure. .

I've seen a lot of variation with these comparison pics on the net.
I'd say first hand is the only real way to tell.

they arrived this morning, not bad - 10 days.

What's good:
the ballasts themselves are very well finished, no yellow stickers here! the writing has a sort of etched effect, very good looking (for ballasts)

there are quite long leads with it, you could mount a ballast behind the fuse box if you wanted.

The power plugs are reversible, ideal for the FTO wiring.

They are unbelievably cheap!

What's bad: The bulbs themselves are a right pain in the bag to fit. I reckon removing the headlight units would be a viable option. I had to unbolt the power steering resevoir to get at the screws on the bulb holders (they need to be loosened a bit)

All in all I'm delighted with them, as everyone has said before, the difference in the light output is staggering, and they look very well too. A must-have FTO mod.
