Marie
It seems you have invested quite a lot in your FTO already. A bit more money will sort your problems and keep you happy, moreover you will be assured your car is in good working order.
Or you can get another car.
In that case you will spend even more money for unknown quality, as you have no guarantee that your new car would not have some faults that you will discover in time.
The decision is yours, but
My offer still stands.
I can drive to you on Sunday, disassemble the head and either you find a machine shop to plant (skim) the head or I can take it with me and give it to machine shop near me. On following Sunday I can come again and reassemble the head. I can give your FTO a good look and tell you what you can expect in future. I work full time (yeah I know it is not very fashionable now) so I can help you on Sundays only.
Your cost would be as follows
1. headgasket
2. cost of planting the head
3. if you are based in Limerick I would ask you for petrol money since it is 200 k. from where I live
4. coffee and black muffin (I love a snack when I work on cars)
It is your ball now

Its just that my GF is working this Sunday, my FTO is ok, and I wouldn't miss the opportunity to fiddle with some car :)

Thats a pretty sound offer out of anyone in fairness! Would be nice to get the car back on the road when it seems like a lost cause, especially if turns out there isnt much wrong with it really.
