SRS light & indicators

Postby Bernard » Fri Aug 27, 2010 12:31 am

I was driving home the other night when a fox ran out in front of the car.
I braked hard but didn't have the time or room to avoid him, he just clipped the left side of the bumper.

There's no visible damage bar the fog light being slightly pushed in.
I checked under the car and found the plastic bracket for the fog has snapped, also both plastic bumper brackets are broken.

My problem is since it happened the SRS light is staying on.
Also the indicators won't work.
The fuse for the indicators had blown, also the hazard fuse (cabin fuse box & engine bay fuse box)
I changed the fuses but the indicator fuse just blew again, even with the indicator completely removed.
Could it be the relay has gone?

The car is driving fine, the brackets are fixable but the SRS light in particular is worrying.
I ran a diagnostic but there were no new codes...

Anyone have any ideas before I take it to a garage?

Oh, and for the animal lovers.
I went back to check the fox, I'd say I killed him instantly (he was only small).

I imagine there is an accelerometer mounted in the front bumper to measure suddened deceleration in a crash to trigger the airbags. I can't see any specific reference to the location of same though. I'd say the sensor took a knock.
Refer to section 52 of the workshop manual (page 253 of 368). SRS light remining on possible loss of earth connection.

Sorry to hear about that Bernard. If the fuse keeps blowing there might be a short circuit somewhere in the indicator wires. Check it with a multi-meter.

I rang an auto spark today, booked the car in for Monday.
He seems to think the SRS light might be a pre-tensioner that went when I slammed on.
I checked the manual and it mentions the indicator label on the seatbelt, no sign of that being exposed so I'm not sure.

Either way I'll update next week when I know more, I just hope it's nothing too serious or costly.

Just got the car back.
The problem with the indicators was just that some wires were pinched, interestingly on the drivers side (fox hit the passenger side).

The guy said that his equipment was too new to run a diagnostic
That said, the SRS light has gone out now too.
He thinks that either the SRS system was on the same fuse circuit as the indicators or it may have been one of the wires that was pinched...

Either way, I'm back in business for €60.

Now all I have to do is tidy up the fog & indicator pods and fix the brackets.
