Adjustable de-cat

Postby finers » Wed Dec 17, 2008 8:05 pm

Hey just decided to purchase a cat instead of messing around making one as they where only €72.80 delivered the next day:), I used the fto discount nice1, every cent helps in this recession:D.

Well it came just an hour ago, looks a bit different to the one advertised it is adjustable and doesn't seem to have a place for the exhaust temp sensor? Should this sensor just be shoved up under the floor?

And there doesnt seem to be a casket of any kind in the middle i wonder if that clip will go on tight enough to create a complete seal.

temp sensor on a decat is superfluous. Just shove the wiring back into the car and remove the bulb from the bottom left on the instrument cluster.

Two nuts at the back hardly had heads on them they where so rusted, wouldn't budge so got a blow torch to them and the heat help to remove them, was surprised to find the front two which where not rusted at all where extremely difficult to budge!!, one just would not move yesterday so i called it a night, anyone else find it difficult to remove these bolts at the front going into the cat?, if i had a lift this would be so much, easyier:D

Any ideas to get these bolts off? there being a pig, all my tools are in a house in Galway, angle grinder, torch etc..., can't move the car now w/o it sounding like a tractor until i get these done. :x

If an overnight WD40 soaking and subseqant heating doesn't work, you may have no option but to get the grinder out. Have you tired a long- shafted torque wrench for extra leverage?

Cheers CJ, Basically all the decent tools have been shipped down to the aul lads new summer house in Galway so every tool i look for is missing :x , I got a half inch 16mm socket and stuck it onto an adjustable tyre wrench and still no joy, the annoying part it that i went at the back two first as i was sure that they would be the fly in the ointment but these are just stuck solid,

I say if i can get my hands on some proper tools ill shift them,
unlike the back as you know these are bolts so i say thats why they are giving more issues, all i can say is why don't they make small parts like these under the car stainless :D

Hey lads, thanks for the help, finally sorted it :D , there was no budging them bolts if i had my long tommy bar i reckon i could have either shifted it or ringed them off, I got the back bolts off and unclipped the cat from it's supports so it hung down to the ground, i then could get the angle grinder at the bolt heads,

De-cat on and it sounds very nice at high revs couldnt notice it at an idle,
It may be just me but it seems a bit more responsive now.

Was wondering about the sensor, it is attached to the down-pipes about half a foot away from the Cat, how does this cause problems?, brought the car for a quick spin and no lights came on, will they when it gets hotter?

the cat itself should have a temp sensor (not the oxygen sensor, a 2nd one) on it. maybe your cat didn't have a sensor?

Maybe the GX's don't have them? maybe yours was replaced. not hugely important now anyway!

you mean it might have been replaced with a GX Cat?, i didn't see any indication of another hole per-say in the under body of the car as well, and the condition them bolts were it i don't think it was likely ever changed,

Do GPvR Aeros come with a different Cat?

Oh sorry, I forgot you had a GPVR, was confusing you with someone else.

Maybe it's a replacement cat and the temp sensor light was removed, or maybe the GPVR hasn't got a sensor in keeping with its weight saving philosophy ;)

another facelift.

EDIT: another facelift (post 1997) model that doesn't have a temp sensor on the cat. maybe they stopped fitting sensors at some point.
