Classic insurance - theres hope down the line

Postby CJ » Thu Aug 09, 2012 12:20 pm

I noted with interest that a number of owners over @ MX5 Ireland are getting classic insurance on >20 year old MX5s (through the likes of Axa and FBD, owner must already have an existing policy on main car and be a member of a classic car club). The FTO will be 20 in 2014, it will be interesting to see if we'll be afforded the same luxury when the time comes.

The value of 94/95 FTO's has just risen if true.

I be inclined to be 'glass half full' on this one until theres more clarity on the assessment criteria. It would be worth getting a team of people together next year to investigate and lobby those concerned in the insurance industry.

or make up a sister website to this one called Classic FTO, all the members that have 94/95 cars can contact the insurance company around the same time showing that there is a lot of interest from the public.

Or just add a classic section to this site. Any fto reaching its 20th birthday is classed as a classic.

This is great news. Hopefully it'll make the pain of getting insurance each year go away.

I'll have to wait until 2021 :( but at least I'll know what's in store from all of your stories once she does turn 20 :)

I have just made some inquiries about getting the FTO insured and have come up with the following. I am insured fully on another vehicle so got these quotes from my current insurers and Campion.

Bear in mind that all of these quotes would be for 40+ age bracket with zero No Claims Bonus (as it's already being used on another vehicle)

Campion - €320 + €60 loading because it's a Japanese import. Quote : €380
Liberty - Obliged to quote because I have a policy with them. Quote : €1060
Chartis/Fore - Declined to quote the vehicle

I couldn't get the Campion guy to budge on price to get him down to the €320, as he said most Japanese imports tend to be high performance cars, hence the additional €60 loading.

Anyway - off to Campion it is for me then as the only viable option.

Thats a pretty subjective comment if tyou ask me, theres a ton of "non-performance" Jap imports on Irish roads. Either way, I think you got an OK deal considering you're a relative aul fella ( ;) ), care to share the terms of the policy in terms of mileage etc?

The mileage is 5k on it

My quote was about 300-350 and there was no mention of loading, just a fee for joining the classic car club which was €50 per year.

I'll pass on any stipulations as soon as I get the policy Ts and Cs.

For reference - this is pretty much the deal http://www.iveta.ie/forms/IVETA%20Campion%20Insurance%20Rates.pdf, with the exception of the additional €60 load for the Jap Import
There isn't any difference pricing, so if any of you guys phone up I would expect the quote to be 100% the same. As you can see, things get better in 2015 and the price drops by €100 once the car hits 20 years.

Main stipulation is that you're insured on another "regular car".

With Campion it's third party only. I was quoted 345 with mods declared.

Just paid my renewal quote for the year with the FTO insured as Third Party Classic.

The car is now 20 years old so insurance drops to €245. 8)

Finally - the days of cheap insurance have arrived for me. Now all I need to do is keep this thing on the road !!

Good stuff, it's always nice to see some good news.
Shame the 15 year deal seems to be off the table now though.

Is the 15 year deal definitely gone - even with Campion ?

Surely even if they don't advertise this outwardly they could accommodate ?

Granted I haven't spoken to them in a while but the last time I did I was told that the company that they used to underwrite the policies had pulled out of the Irish market.
I made a few more calls, all to no avail.
Must try again, perhaps some of the classic clubs have some more info.

Per the other posts above, the main things are :
- Must be your second car, although they don't check anything here at all, not even asking what other car you have
- It's Third Party Fire and Theft
- 5000 miles per annum stipulation, although I don't remember seeing this anywhere on my documentation either
