Expensive job?

Postby sinlessgunner » Wed Apr 16, 2008 6:41 pm

Ok lads just picked up the FTO from the work shop. As I posted earlier had to get the pipe from the Cat to the Backbox replaced because it was rusting away.

There's a stainless steel pipe there now and the car sounds amazing, so much better than it was but......it cost 350 euro!!

Does this seem expensive or would it be an average price?.......

Just wondering because it gave me quite a shock!

Well -- it depends on what quality stainless steel was used and labour etc.
Personally I'd have spent the extra €50 and got the centre section AND backbox - something like a Mongoose - http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m3b0s11p460

Stainless steel is pretty expensive, but if it was welded on then its prob the welding that would have made up the bulk of the cost.

Well I had considered completely replacing the unit but the mechanic said the backbox and exit pipe were in perfect condition.

I really like the sound of the Invidia and wouldn't really have reason to change over.

I had it in my head that it would cost a good bit less to replace the system but 350 just seemed a little bit high. Got quite a shock to be honest.....

HI sg,

Just a quick one relating to this. Was that cost including fitting? If so that would be quite a bit cheaper than replacing the entire system from cat back I would assume. The reason I ask is that I have a few holes in my exhaust in the mid section and at least that is probably the most it will cost if it works out too dear to simply weld the holes (haven't had a thorough look yet so there could be quite a few!)

Anyway, glad it's sorted for you now and sounds right.

It might work out slightly cheaper but I bet it won't be long before the baffles start rattling in the backbox of that Invidia especially if the new centre section has increased flow properties. It will be especially apparent from cold.

I had an Invidia previous to my Quad blueflame - they do sound nice but the backbox baffles are usually the first thing to go - the fact your centre section has gone would indicate to me that you have a limited lifespan left in the backbox.

Yeah the cost included fitting. He took off the old one, made up a new pipe and put on the new one.

I suppose it was reasonable enough and considering the lad I share a house with got one put on the bike he's refurbishing and it cost him 120 euro!

What are baffles in the backbox? Never heard that term before

Cheers MFFTO.

Now Martin, if you can't understand that there's something wrong.
