Another recomendation for Dave McCann

Postby soc » Tue Aug 24, 2004 4:21 pm

Was out at Dave McCann's today for laser alignment of the GR in prep for sale - absolutely brilliant service. The guys are extremely friendly and the job done was A1 - the rear was way out in camber and now it's setup properly the car feels really planted, grippy and responsive. (brings a tear to my eye when I think I'm selling it....)

If you live near the Dublin area and haven't been out to Dave McCann's yet then you should get out there asap and get your FTO setup properly.

You should at least get sets of front and rear ARB bushes and droplinks, it'll make a big difference if you've never changed them and you've had the car a few years. Rory should be able to help you out (unless splitrims are also supplying them ;))

Also got my jammer done with Dave & Co. Sound guys, I brought the settings with me and they were exactly the same as their database. I didn't notice much of a difference as I knew my car was in pretty good shape. The back wheels were a little out. Good to do it just to be sure especially if you have a new set of tyres on.
What was interesting is that camber settings etc are often way out when a car leaves the factory!

I probably haven't read through the tech manuals enough, but where can I get the settings for an alignment? Getting one done this weekend. Not Dave McCanns though, I'm in Cork, going down to Bantry Tyres to get 2 new front tyres, and they have a laser alignment setup too so should be good.

You can get suspension geometry off the FTOOC site, I won't bother pasting them in as the formatting will get messed up.

From what they've told me, its the only system of its kind in Ireland, they only have it installed a few months. They have an email address if you want to ask them directly - davemccann@oceanfree.net

Went out to Dave McCann's on Monday for laser alignment have to agree top job and sound lads. The rear was miles out and the front was slightly out, but I noticed a difference straight away.

I went out to Dave McCanns on Saturday before the motorshow meet.
And I have to say that I am a lot less enthusiastic than the rest of the people here. The alignment was way out but this was to be expected as I had done a major job on the suspension the previous week.
I had gotten the tracking done locally about 2 months previous, and the guy had left the steering wheel off centre to the left....extremely annoying.
So I asked the guys in McCanns specifically to sort this out.
Firstly I was charged €65 for the service, apparently the €40/€45 fee was an introductory offer
Secondly after leaving the place and driving down the M50 I noticed that the steering wheel was way off-centre to the right (about an inch of travel ). I didn't go back as I was already late for the meet, as, due to a problem with the printer it had taken about twenty minutes just to get a print out of the results :x
I am now faced with the prospect of having to get the alignment done for the third time in the space of 3 months.
Despite this issue with the steering they seem to have done a good job.
I am hoping that I can get a garage to just sort out the steering alignment, without undoing the set up done by McCanns, and without charging me full whack!

No. It's the standard Mitsubishi/Momo leather trimmed wheel fitted to the GR sports pack.

Mustang, if you ring them and tell them the story, I'll sure they'll sort it for you for nothing.

Thanks for the advice guys, but I'm not sure that I can justify driving to Dublin (from Clare) just to get this sorted. It would probably cost about the same just to get it sorted locally. Maybe I'll head up though! Take the missus shoping or something while I'm at it and win some brownie points

I've just collected the car from Mid West Tyres and they seem to have sorted it. The guy said the wheel was way off, and took the car for a test drive to ensure the wheel was centred.
€25 for four wheel laser alignment, btw after talking to a few people that appears to be the going rate in these parts. (outside the pale).€65 seems very harsh in comparison.
The more I think about the McCann experience the more annoyed I get  .
€65 + petrol + M50 tole (another pet hate of mine) + time all gone to waste. Financial lessons are always tough.
Count me out of the Dave McCann fan club.

Yeah - paid €25 euro 2 weeks ago for tracking and also adjusting the coilovers on the missus' RS Roadster. Never had to pay more than that - the guys I use also do a very thorough job.

Think I got royally screwed then, paid €80 was it for 4 wheel laser alignment and a new valve for one of my wheels, and that was after nearly an hour and a half drive!! Sounded steep at the time but first time getting it done so wasn't sure and just paid it.

Sounds well worth the hours spin to the wesht!

I thought he was excellent - lets you watch as they make the adjustments and explains what's happening all the way through the job. I didn't think €60 was that bad to pay as it took them about 30-40 minutes to do and it is pretty high tech equipement. Car felt way better after job was complete - I don't think there is anyway you can get the same setup without the laser equipment.
