lowering my fto

Postby witcher » Sat May 22, 2010 8:12 pm

I need to lower my fto (wrong decision about the size of droplinks:)), for app 25 mm (let say between 20 and 30 mm). Has anyone lowered the car by this much and any suggestions on the spring choice?? What you lads used??
Thanks

http://cgi.ebay.ie/APEX-LOWERING-SPRING ... 2a074c05b3

I have always used APEX on all my cars. Reliable and not too expensive either.

Thank you.
They are much cheaper on Camskill :), but it is good to know that somebody is actually using these and the quality is right

Just saw that now, very cheap alright! You will get another 10% off if you say you are an Fto Ireland member too.

Quality is great on Apex stuff, i've used them on 3 cars with no problems.

Dont know too much about them to be honest. There is strut braces fitted to my car, they do tighten up the handling a bit. Are these the same thing?

No, these are not the same, ARB aka sway bars stabilise suspension at the lower end of the car and are connected to drop links, while strut braces keep things nice and tight up there on top of shocks. Both devices tighten the ride, but fitting different thickness ARB allows you to set up over and understeering of tendencies of your car, as a rule of the thumb FWD cars are factory set up for understeer, since it is generally safer for majority of drivers. Changing thickness of ARB allows you to balance the under and oversteer of the car. The effects are most profound in 4wd cars but any car and/or driver benefits from correct or favourite set up. IMHO.
I forgot to mention, I should at the beginning of the post, that ARB reduce roll of the car, additional side effect of fitting thicker and therefore stiffer ARB is that you do not need to set up shocks to extreme hard to have good overall control of the car.

Mine is lowered pretty much as far as you can go. Not sure what springs are on it as they were on when she came in, only thing I would say is watch your wheel arches if going low, I recently had to replace my fronts cause my wheels wore through and exposed electrical wires in the bay.

(The white one is mine)

I thought all these are yours :). Seriously, very nice FTO you have got there.
I understand your point, that is why I want just 20 to 30 mm lower, not more. From what I read Apex springs will lower front (I drive GS, meaning lighter engine, I also got rid of aircon, which is another couple of pounds lighter), by app 30 mm, and back by 25 mm. Can any GS owner confirm/dispute??
