FTO manual gearbox final drive ratio

Postby d_dan » Fri May 09, 2008 9:27 am

Thought some of the lads might be intrested. when I came across this.

FTO Gearboxes the manual ratio`s are not all the same.

Well they are however there are 2 different output shafts available one 17 teeth and one 16, which gives you 2 different final drives the 4.312 list on every FTO site you see but also a 4.058

So with an 8000 redline and 4.312 final drive you get
Top Speed in 1 gear = 36.190 MPH
Top Speed in 2 gear = 66.600 MPH
Top Speed in 3 gear = 94.032 MPH
Top Speed in 4 gear = 125.894 MPH
Top Speed in 5 gear = 158.135 MPH

and with an 8000 redline and 4.058 final drive you get
Top Speed in 1 gear = 38.460 MPH
Top Speed in 2 gear = 70.777 MPH
Top Speed in 3 gear = 99.930 MPH
Top Speed in 4 gear = 133.789 MPH
Top Speed in 5 gear = 168.052 MPH

This should knock 3-400 rpm off your motorway cruising..

So which fto has which output? is there any way of determining without taking the car apart?

I know that mine will definitely do 70+ just before the shift in second going onto the M50.

Whatever way you look at it thats very high gearing for a 200bhp sports car. The FTO is one of the few cars I know that you don't need to go beyond 3rd gear for a 1/4 mile sprint. The equivalant DC2 Type R's are well into their 4th gear despite similar terminal speeds.

I'm sure a shorter ratio would really help the FTO's 1/4 mile times but you'd have to put up with a busier sounding engine on a day to day basis.

BTW - I don't know where you got the second set of figures. AFAIK - the standard FTO Manual box on GS/GR/GPX etc uses a 4.312 final drive ratio. The FTO would be at a performance disadvantage using the second set of figures.

Yeah and mine appears to use the second set. :(

I haven't driven it in a while so I'll have to make sure when I get it back but I'm pretty sure it'll shift up to third on the far side of 70. Of course that could just be down to some sort of inaccuarcy in the delimiter...

I always wondered why the FTO didn't have a performance advantage over the DC2 despite a better power to weight ratio. I wonder is it down to gearing?

Does anybody know of a different gearbox that would fit the FTO? Like perhaps maybe one from an EVO or a Galant?

I wouldn't mind getting a 6 gear box - just dreaming really.. You know what I'm like :-)

I would be surprised if you are using a 4.058 final drive ratio - never heard of it on an FTO before - its already too highly geared on a 4.312 final drive ratio.

I found when doing the 1/4 mile sprints in the FTO that if I went beyond 60mph in 2nd that I was loosing time on the overall 1/4 mile time. My fastest 0-60 time was 6.4 secs however on my fastest 1/4 mile time (14.7) - my fastest 0-60 was 6.7secs ( I had changed into 3rd at around 58mph). It all came down to where the peak power band lies in the FTO - going into 8200rpm plus wasn't helping my time as my peak power lay around 7900-8100rpm. It was also important to keep the FTO in the mivec zone - if you fell out of it at all (on upchanges) you were going to get a slow time. Factors like tyre diameter and engine mods will also have an effect on individual FTO's.

the longer ratio is 4.058 for a gpx?
and there is something to change the ratio? an aftermarket final ratio?

you could put the non mivecs final drive in but i wouldnt bother really.

You will find that the non Mivecs are nippier up to 5500 RPM thats due to their gearbox ratio. But with the longer ratio the Mivec has a higher top speed in each gear.

A mitsubishi Colt Cyborg. dogbox will fit but the ratio is way too short to any form of normal driving.

In my personal oppinion i would just get a light weight flywheel as will help you get up through the revs quicker

Yip theres a few out there.
I Would go for RPW if you dont want your car to be off the road.

As they will send you out a new flywheel straight away,
As the likes of freeky parts need your old one for the O ring.

I was gonna get one for the car but there only really much good for NA cars.
Make sure you get new flywheel bolts of RPW too as the new one is less thick than the sandard one

All the gear ratios of different models of FTOs are on the link below. Actually this website has lots of great info about FTOs.
http://www.mivec.co.uk/

Click on 'FTO performance' on the left hand side of the screen.
