Thats one hardcore, car hatin cow...
Something similar happened me in my old car (not as bad though)...

Was driving at night and the car in front of me stuck on his hazards and swerved a little bit, couldnt see a thing until a cow ran out of no where charging towards me. I swerved towards the ditch and he hit the back of the car and sort of re-aligned me back towards the road and I drove on, never went back to check if was messed up or antin, just laughed all the way home and not a mark on the car...madness!

Find the owner and file damages?

If you owned a horse and he strayed onto a road at night and a car hit him, you'd be liable for the damages...

Not so with a lot of other animals though, as far as I know if you hit a cow you're at fault. Especially if there are signs up saying cattle crossing.

Nope, cows are owners fault too. A friend of mine ended up with a bull on his roof after hitting it at 40mph. Not much left of the car, but the owner paid up.

I hit a lamb once, and killed it. It didn't do much damage to the car. I never bothered to contact the farmer though. Which is just as well, coz I took the lamb home and ate it. Mint sauce....YUMMY..! :D

RTA (Road Traffic Accident) is now RTC (Road Traffic Collision). They dropped the accident bit because it implies no one is to blame. There is always some one at fault..

Think it might matter so if the owner is with the cattle. Cause there was a lorry a few years ago down home that hit a herd, killed 2, and the driver had to pay up.

My dads friend owned the cow so i don't think ill be filin damages, we both laughed over it in the bar that night, got a pint over it, to be honest i'd be more upset if some one hit in in a car park etc.. kinda have a funny story now,, got the dint out by pushing the indented part back out with a screw driver it's still not perfect think it needs to be rolled out or something but you'd hardly notice it now, and a bit of t-cut did wonders on the scratches :D

Up to a few years ago it was the driver that would be at fault - however the onus is now on the owner of the animal (be it a cow or a dog etc) to have them off a public road.
