gpx arrived

Postby johnny » Thu Oct 12, 2006 12:37 am

my black manual gpx finally arrived from japan today, shes even better than i thought, only a couple of things to sort out. But i have a dilemma: sell my lancer and pay the crazy €3800 insurance (im only a baby at 19) or
sell the fto and only pay €1500 ins on the mivec lancer. I wud have about €3000 cash spare from sellin the lancer and i start a full time work placement in feb, what u think, should i let my heart rule my head for once? Oh yeah, almost forgot, wat kind of money wud u be spending to get the timing belt changed, and can any one recommend someone to do it?

GPX Manual

Postby baldtyres » Thu Oct 12, 2006 1:09 am

Congrats Johnny....... Had a Civic Vtec while I had my GPX manual and sold the honda one year to fund the insurance.
Now i'm nearer your dads age probably, so I'm not being raped as badly by the insurance companies but Jesus that insurance price is horrible!
Is that fully comp or TPFT.
I went back to TPF&T after paying shameful sums of money for Fully comp for a few years.
It'll make you drive a bit more sensibly as a crash is a horrible thought financially. Actually probably not ... as touched on in another thread I know I'd have driven like a man possessed if I had anything like a GPX back when I was 19.

Good luck with the decision, I find the longer I have the FTO the more I want to keep it .... As of recent months, I'd say I officially have it longer than any relationship I ever stayed in. :smt023

A dilemma indeed. While its easy to go with your heart and pick the FTO, you have to think of the financial implications. While the FTO isn't very expensive to run, you'll be paying more in motor tax and petrol over the course of the year. When you say you'll be starting full time placement work in February, is this to say you're still in college? If so, the guts of 4 grand a year on insurance is gonna be tough.

Cambelt change price varies, typically you're talking 250 quid, you may as well get a full service done on the car while you're at it. Consider visiting Paul Nolan in Artane - he's the official FTO-Ireland mechanic ;)

Thats fully comp, wen i think of it though if i did damage the car i doubt id claim for it since that wud push the premium out of this world, so might get the TPFT.

Yeah im studying in dcu, sure wud be tough but i have a very good p/t job worth about €250 per week, and i dont have anything else to spend me money on so i think il keep both cars, drive the lancer till the insurance is up in feb and in the meantime get the fto in tip top condition. I think it will be worth it, since a black manual gpx was what i wanted and might be hard to come by again, i wudnt mind keepin it for 3-4 years, then its evo time :D

Just something to think about - if your GPX isn't insured, and its nicked or damaged, you're on your own...
