Postby Ronanc » Wed Jan 18, 2006 12:33 pm

im having a strange problem, my car isnt holding coolant ;-( i thought the head gasket was gone but it doesnt apear to be that, the coolant is filling the expansion tank up and is over flowing out, i dont know what the problem with it is? the coolant pipe going from the top of the radiator into the top of the head doesnt seem to have any pressure in it for some reason.

has anyone any ideas? im crap it ill blow the head gasket :-(

There could be a blockage somewhere in your system.. Check all yer hoses - and make sure you have a flow though your radiator..

Very odd though.

one thing i did notice tho was that the seal on the radiator cap has seen better days, and maybe its not holding the pressure in? but i couldnt see that making the expansion tank to fill up?

Could it be a busted water pump?

The water will go to where there is least resistance..

Are bits of the Rubber seal missing - or is it just torn/flaky?

My thoughts exactly. Or could it be a faulty thermostat. Are you getting a correct temperature reading in the car?

cheers lads, my heaters work fine, always get the right air coming out so maybe that rules out the thermostat? as for the waterpump is there any way of checking it other than pulling the whole thing out? my temp sits under the halfway mark and never goes above that or under that,

this is really wreaking my head

Ah altight..it should still be able to seal properly..

It's v. strange alright... If you have free flow through the system I'd be leaning towards the pump being at fault as well - it could be worth checking connections, fuses and such before starting a major dismantle :-)

Personally..I'd be included to drop by a mechanic..

Are you getting any air in your system at all, cos it should be completely sealed, even if it is expanding the overflow tank should still just let water suck back in when it is cooled. If you have got air in the system then there must be a leak somewhere. When I had this problem it was my heater matrix. One thing I noticed though was frothing of the coolant. Presumeably as the air was drawn in.

just picked up my new rad cap from mitsi, the coolant pipe at the top of the radiator going to the head seems to have alot more pressure in it when i sqeuze it, so only time will tell if its sorted.

will let ya all know
