GR Tappets

Postby briencrean » Wed Feb 18, 2009 12:54 am

I am getting really annoyed with my tappets. My car sounds like a tractor at this stage!

I have tried all the usual to resolve it but I am now going to get them replaced in the near future.

I saw the set of aftermarket tappets on camskill for £265

However I now found genuine Mitsubishi tappets on JDM performance for £264 in total (£11 each according to the site)!

http://www.jdmperformance.co.uk/item_de ... odID=35395

I though that it was a bit strange to find Genuine Mitsi tappets for the same price?

I've seen these replaced and then the noise comes back a week later. Sometimes it's blocked oil resevoirs etc so it could be a whole load of work for no real benefit. Is the noise on cold starting for a couple of mins or all the time?

Tappats

Postby welshrarebit » Wed Feb 25, 2009 11:41 pm

Hi all. Just joined today. Love my FTO but getting very frustrated!!!!! Think there is a problem with Tappats...flippin hate the noise it makes...its embarassing!!!

Don't know much about cars so what could the possible problems be? Also finding it difficult to get any flippin mechanic to do any work on the FTO. As a woman, don't know if people putting off doing the work? They all say its a big job & expensive! Any thoughts would be gratefully received.

Hey welcome to the world of FTO!
There's loads of people out there that moan that the FTO is an 'Import' and you can't get anything for it which is totally untrue.
If you're tappets are noisy there is more than likely nothing wrong with the car as it's an 'Achilles heel' with some of the V6s' If you have a GPX Mivec model they can be adjusted with a bit of work.
Good quality fully synthetic oil should be used when doing an oil change. Some people say to do an engine flush before but I never noticed any difference to be honest.
But tappets usually should quieten down after 5mins or so after cold start up, can be a wee bit embarrassing sometimes!
If you have any other specific enquires don't hesitate as there are lots of people on here that can help out or point you in the right direction. One thing I would check out is the condition of the timing belt (as in all secondhand cars) and get it changed if necessary.
The FTO is a great car and very reliable :D

Tappats

Postby welshrarebit » Thu Feb 26, 2009 12:09 am

Thanks for the response...feel much better now. Kept thinking something seriously wrong with my baby! A mechanic I know told me it would cost 600 euro to replace tappats and that its a big job.

Could do with some guidance re: mechanics in Dublin who can confidently work on the FTO. Have a V6 GTX 99, already got timing belt changed so not that. The noise is initially worse on start up, but never really seems to go away. Spoils the look of the car...I am vain, I know it!

Also need to replace the side lights and having terrible trouble trying to replace them. No motor factors appear to have seen the particular type that came with the car...not original. Look like they might be USA. As I said earlier, Know very little about cars!!!

Lights

Postby welshrarebit » Thu Feb 26, 2009 12:19 am

Sorry, I'm sounding vague, and not terribly good at explaining. Don't have all technical terms. Its the smaller side light in the headlight. Does that make sense?

yup, like parking lights?

they're just standard 5w push in jobbies as seen on pretty much every car as far as I know.

Lights

Postby welshrarebit » Thu Feb 26, 2009 12:24 am

Thanks for that. The lights in the car I think have been filed to fit, are the blue headed ones, and a lot brighter than the standards. Will browse the link you send sent me. Cheers!

they're available everywhere, they're very common. I'm guessing the previous owner fitted LEDs instead of bulbs

Do all Gpx's have parking lights in the headlight? The guy I bought mine off said the parking lights (ie the ones in the indicator pod) had been converted to foglights as they are a legal requirement in the uk.

Oh yeah that'd make sense. Well mine is a prefacelit and has them in the headlight. Would that be unusual for a prefacelift so?

if the bumper was changed and there are no parking lights (prefacelift) in in , then probably yer man got facelift clusters with the bumper upgrade .

as far as i know all prefacelift fto's have the parking lights in the bumper clusters with the indicators .

on the models where fog lights are present these are as well in that bumper cluster.(i had to put new clusters in my GR when i did my Fog upgrade)

::: thread split maybe?
