New speakers!

Postby Wildhound » Wed Aug 29, 2007 12:02 am

I went out today and finally bought myself some decent speakers. I'd had enough of the earth-shattering 15W speakers from the factory. ;)

I got some FLI 70 Watts for the front and JBL 100 Watts for the back. Took me all evening to get the rear ones out (rear windscreen wiper made it a female dog), but it was worth it. Sounds fantastic!

Colm if you still want those 6x9s they're ready to go.

Fronts are 6.5" (16.5cm). Bear in mind that the built in amp in a lot of head units isn't up to much, changing the speakers may not have a huge impact on sound quality (unless the stock speakers have holes in the diaphram that is!)

Yes!... and bare in mind that if you wanna buy an amplifier, it has to have 25-35% less power per channel than the speakers. Or speakers have to be 25-35% more powerfull per channel than amp if you prefere this way of thinking  (sinus power not music power) otherwise... the speakers won`t pass a real serious volume tests

Whoa, hold off on the defensiveness fella! You'll find that 6x9s fill the soundscope lower down the range and appear to 'sound' better, standard mid range door speakers often lack high end punch, I'd recommend a decent set of componants with tweeters and seperate crossovers. In my experience, changing speakers may offer a crisper sound over stock but the change in sound quality is often negligable due to the lack of power in the head units amp. As Ditrylopez said, check the RMS output per channel of your head unit and match the speakers accordingly in an effort to reduce distortion @ high volume. I've a 4 channel Rockford Fosgate amp driving all 6 speakers (+ a seperate amp for the sub), the difference in quality over using the head unit amp (25W RMS per channel) is significant.

Note that most head units specify per channel output as PMPO as opposed to RMS - divide the PMPO figure by 2 in order to determine RMS output.

Yeah my head unit is 4x50w and it sounds fantastic with the new speakers. The 15w ones weren't up to much. Of course the head unit is soon to be changed too (Need one that's MP3 compatible and has an aux-in), but one thing at a time.

The stock front speakers are 16.5cm, but you could get 17s in if you wanted to. No matter what you're putting in you'll probably have to drill some new holes in the plastic support thingy in the door.

Colm tomorrow night's grand for me, just name a place! Curiously the stock rear speakers aren't actually 6x9s. They're 16.5cm speakers mounted to a 6x9 surround.

That was more of a Have you been in my car? :D
As you hit the nail on the head with stock speakers have holes in the diaphram. As I'm sure they have blown.

They're the original 15w ones with the Mitsubishi logo.

They're the same as the front speakers but they're mounted to a 6x9 metal surround that fits perfectly in the back.

The stock speakers were rebranded Panasonics IIRC...
