4th NCT - Finally Failed - Emissions

Postby Kace » Fri Jun 13, 2008 12:38 pm

Got flying colours on everything this morning out in Ballymun, except the emissions. Paul N alerted me that they were off the scale and this was confirmed today. My CO2 values are 25 times higher than my last NCT (even with very hot engine), so something must be shot.

Plan as follows :
1. Replace Lambda Sensor. Ordered Universal sensor and plan to fit asap
2. Replace engine coolant temperature sensor
3. Retest with PaulN and hopefully see a reduction, if so retest at NCT
4. Assume that it's the Cat and seek substitute / replacement

Must be costing me a fortune at the pumps - hadn't really noticed !!

The first thing I would do is replace the cat. 9 times out of 10 this is the problem.
After that the the O2 sensor.
You can test the coolant sensor, see manual for procedure.

There is a section in the manual that deals with fault finding when the emissions are high

I'd go with the cat as well first, when I got mine checked initaially they took the readings wrong and thought it was high so the first thing they said was the cat was removed or broken, (wasnt either but its still the point that it was the first thing they thought of).

What we have to remember here is a CAT converter has a life span and deteriorates over time.
Most of the FTO's on here are almost 13 years old so the CAT would be reaching the end of their lifes depending on mileage.

Went out to Paul this evening and fitted a new Lambda Sensor (Universal) that I bought off eBay for €20 delivered.

Paul hooked her up in 5 mins (involves a little cutting and crimping), I drove around the block to heat her up, voila - emissions had shot right down to very low levels again - result !!

As stated previously in this thread, most emissions issues are due to either an engine that isn't fully heated, or a poorly performing Cat. The telltale sign that it's a Lambda problem is that the emissions are not just slightly out, they're out so much it seems as though you're driving a Caterpillar truck they're so high.

Anyway - this is a very cheap fix, given that a Camskill genuine OEM Lambda will set you back the guts of €400

It's in the post :-)

Hey - I'm a bit confused - is this the sensor that goes after the cat or in the down pipes?

O2 sensor is fitted to the downpipe before the CAT

This is the one that goes into the downpipe before the Cat. The connector goes up into the underbody through a grommet.

Lads, I was of the opinion that lambda sensor and oxygen sensor are the same thing. You sure the exhaust temp sensor isn't in the downpipe?

Kace, any idea which wires Paul used (for future reference)? OT, but what did you reckon of his new place - big improvement I would say!

O2 and Lambda are the same. The O2/Lambda sensor is the one just before the CAT , screwed into the down pipe. The one on the CAT is the exhaust over temp sensor.

The wiring is explained in the eday link above CJ

The wiring details on the eBay link are not actually that great and they don't provide details as to what the wires on the Universal Lambda actually are, e.g. heater, signal, ground.

I actually got my details from our friends down under http://www.ftoaustralia.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=13136

Nice bunch - seriously large user community down there, all with the similar interests to our own.

Paul Nolan's new place is amazing - the poor fecker doesn't know what to do with all the space

Hard to believe the size of the place he actually came from - now that really was the quintessential 'back street' garage !!

Still the best FTO mechanic in Dublin !!
