The VR-4 has landed

Postby CJ » Fri Feb 29, 2008 9:27 am

I picked the VR-4 up from the port yesterday and got the VRT out of the way while I was at it, heres my first impression:

Its effortlessly quick, the power is put down through the 4 wheels with ease and you're up to 60 in what appears like a split second (well 5.9 seconds to be specific ;)). The 5-speed tip box is very smooth and shifts with ease.

Both the exterior and interior are very clean, this car was well looked after in Japan (theres a a bucket load of regular Mitsi service history in the manual which is very promising).

The previous owner put on a spare set of 16" alloys with snow tyres for the winter season, grip in the dry is brutal! On the test drive last night, I hit a roundabout at speed, all four wheels started to slip badly (whcih was scary) but the AYC system did its things effortlessly which resulted in a dramatic 4-wheel drift out of the roundabout (which was fun).

I'll get some pics up soon, in the mean time, I'm looking for alloy wheels (17") ideas, its either gonna be:

A set of Enkeis off an EVO
A glass black rim with polished lip (ala Daves Z)
A gunmetal gray rim

Answers on a postcard....

I'll get some decent non-mobile phone pics up when I get the chance.

that looks sweet!!!!! 8)

I don't really need to give my opinion on which alloys to get, but I reckon a nice black centre five spoke rim would look the nutts in there, especially with the calipers painted red!!!

So when are you giving out test drives??

Congrats man, looks very well, and sounds like a dream to drive. :)

After seeing you're FTO in the flesh, I can't wait to see what you do to this one and watch it develop.

Well wear...

   Stunning. Love those cars. Has it made the GPX sale a little easier??! As for alloys, gunmetal grey every time for me.

Did the new FTO land also?

Looks really well - Does need the rims though.
Try and keep the Stealth look - don't go for a polished lip - I don't think it would suit the car.

I wonder what a set of BBS alloys would look like under there?

Otherwise (people are gonna start thinking I work there) - you could go with 18inch Rota Torques (the light weight would offset the larger size)

Black alloys on a black car would be too much - gunmetal, bronze or just silver would be better. If black - you need to offset it like with perhaps a red lip on a set of black Rotas.

Dave, I knew MfFTO never liked those wheels on your Z ;)

/runs for cover

I hear what you're saying though, some contrast would work well (hence the polished lip option). At some point, I plan to get a set of Brembos off an EVO and throw them on, its a direct bolt on job. As such, I need to ensure the wheel choice allows for this. I'll need to get reading up on offsets methinks....

Who'd want wheels like that on a Zed? - you should sell them cheap immediately - I know some eejit that would take them off your hands.

I doubt it Dave, no demand for that style dontcha know ;)

Had a good look at the car for the first time this afternoon, while Daves rims look great, I'm not so sure the black would suit the body style of the Galant. I'm veering more towards gunmetal, more web searching required....

ok, back on topic, I had a look at those Rota's and the gunmetal ones do look 8) and you would be able to go for a larger rim too and keep the weight down!!

Personally I think dark rims on a dark car gives a nice - ehm - subdued look.. maybe that's just me..

Dropped into Rotarims on the way home, they wanted 1350 quid for a set of 17x8 Torque Bronze with Toyo T1-S tyres (800 for rims and 550 for tyres despite the fact that they specify 950 for the rims on their site). I took the rim out and put it up beside the car but it didn't look right. Think its time to give Photoshop a whirl.

thats a good price inc decent tyres.

Its hard to hold a rim up against a car and get an accurate idea of how it'll look. Did you check out the Rota GTR's?
