Limited edition, Newtownards?

Postby optical illusion » Sun Sep 20, 2009 9:27 pm

Having only 500 in the world means I don't really know what I'm looking for, but I'm sure one was parked outside the Strangford Arms last Friday.

Seemed like the proper dandelion yellow, upholstery was yellow and black and it had the green 'japan car of the year' badge on both sides. Has been heavily modified which kinda ruins it if it is the real deal...

What do you think? Honored if it is and he's been carded! Excuse the crap quality, Derek's camera is old.

Definitely.

As well as all the obvious stuff, Limited editions all came with HID's (with small HID logo inside the glass), sunroof and rear wiper. so if you see a yellow FTO without these, then it's probably a fake!

If you look at the pic there can you not see HID's? My god the upholstery looked spot on.

Would you really go to the effort of removing sunroof and rear wiper is the question though...

That's a leather or leatherette retrim. Special edition hasn't got special seats.

twould be a disgrace to modify a special edition anyway.

that said, a manual conversion and a set of Apex springs (yellow of course) wouldn't be a problem.

Not sure about removing the rear wiper but I did see a post on the FTOOC about a guy that removed his sunroof. He had a few pictures of the process as it went through the different stages. It involved a lot of work to strenghten the roof as the supports were designed to facilitate the s/r and didn't suit the metal roof. He had to put in new supports for the metal roof and weld the roof itself on too (obviously). He also went to the effort of having the raised parts of the roof built up by a panel beater as it was easier than trying to bend the metal to the right shape. IIRC it cost something outrageous like £1200 to do it all (respraying the roof inc).
A lot of effort considering he could have just bought one with a metal roof if thats what he wanted.

Think I once found a quick way to spot if an fto was born with a sun roof or not..

Cars withough sunroof have the bonnet "bulge" continuing over the roof... cars with sunroof have no bulge...
