Alloy fitment- spacer width

Postby dave100 » Fri Sep 09, 2005 9:02 am

Iv fitted 18 x 7.5 alloys with a 42 offset and added 5mm spacers but the wheels could do with coming out further in my opinion.

Whats the maximum spacer thickness with standard length bolts?

The standard length bolts are actually quite short - I'm not a big fan of spacers really TBH - they won't help your handling much as they put too much pressure on the wheel bearings.

Having said all that - I know the FTO will take 10mm spacers quite easily - I have an offset of 35 on my 8J alloys and they sit nicely on the car so I guess a nice compromise would be 7mm spacers on your 42 offset - won't look a lot different than the 5mm though. There are guys in the UK using much larger than 10mm spacers but I think this would start to affect handling and put your car at risk as well.

Just my twopence worth really - if you want your car for show then put 12mm spacers on - if you like your handling and steering as well stick to the 5-7mm ones. If you want more than 12mm I would advise buying longer studs but the best bit of advice would be to have bought the correct offset in the first place.

It will look well Dave but I'm fairly sure you will put your geometry out a bit with different size spacers - your tyres may also show some unusual wear patterns - better to go 7 or 8mm allround than have different size spacers front and rear.

you need to be careful here cause as far as I know 10mm spacers will be non-hubcentric, i.e. they will be flat and won't have a lip on them (like the hubs) which you can use to poperly center the wheel. A lot of guys running gti's in the uk use spacers to push out the rear wheels and they complain about vibration when using non-hubcentric spacers (cause wheel isn't seated completely center.
