Need urgent assisatance

Postby dwayne21 » Thu May 12, 2005 4:27 am

I have a manual mitsubishi gpx fto. The car was taken off the road to get the whole engine overhauled i changed everything including the crank.I set back up the car only to realise the car has an awful engine note.Sounded like it was on 5 cylinders. From checking however it seems like it is on 3 cylinders.Only the front 3 cylinders are working the back 3 cylinders are not working.I have checked everything.I check the injectors cleaned them, the harness has power no problems there, changed plugs check all the sensors they seem good but i can;t get off of this 3 cylinders.I checked coil packs they are sparking i am using brand new magnecore plugs leads those are good still i can;t get the engine to sound right. I even tried another computer to see if it was that and same effect.
I am curious what do you guys thing the problem could be.I need help here urgent for i am completely lost and as u know few people know the fto engine set up since cars are fairly rear if you guys can help me that would be great for right now i am extremely frustrated with the car right now.

Dwayne, I was going to recommend an ECU swap but I see you've already done that. I suggest you try and get some diagnostic readouts from the ECU, check out the following link, its not very difficult to undertake the task yourself:

Not being familiar with the diagnostics or the particular set up of the FTO engine and ECU, but just a thought....... Could it be running in 'safe mode' most modern cars have a default safe mode which cuts some of the cylinders to limit engine speed etc. Of course this only cuts in when something is wrong and does not tell you whats wrong!

changed plugs

Dwayne, as I'm sure you are aware the OEM spec plugs for front and rear bank are different, rears being longer life. But theres a note (on the front spark plug cover I think), about using the correct plugs with built in resistor. You sure you are using the correct plugs on the rear bank?

You can use the same plugs front and back. The rears are normally iridiums to save you swapping them out so often.

No idea sorry! I guess you could always reset the ECU. Has the engine light come on? If you are sure the injectors are working, sounds to me like an electrical /ECU probelem. Do you have the electrical wiring manual (on downloads page) there, all manor of sensors in and around the engine, perhaps one of those is shot! Sorry can't really be of much help, just guessing

The car has stopped running on the 3 cylinders up front and all 6 are firing but the engine has knocked again.Has anyone here ever overhauled an fto engine or changed anything in the bottom half. Can any crank from a mivec fto work in another mivec ftos block or are there different mivec fto blocks or blocks to suit the cranks. The car sounds like its slow getting back to perfect working order. What i want to know is if the computer of the car is not in action for a certain amount of time does it go in safe mode or is it a feature to shut down parts of its working order and does it relearn itself or thats not an fto trait. If you have a site with information that i am looking for please send. Also can you give me a good website that sells conrod bearings for the mitsubishi fto.I know camskill or there any others.Thanks.
