im looking for
a

to be able to put a low rev limit on the car

(because the police where i live are doing cars for being too loud, 74db @ 3/4 rev limit)
so if i can set the limit to 6k rpm then would have to be 4.5krpm

and secondly dose actually seem like a cool gizmo for drag racing/ sprints
for the likes of the pod

also do they not look at the rev counter?

its not for that. its if the gards try and stop me for the loud exhaust.
(the apexi ECV only really works when your moving)

if they can only get ya on 3/4 the rev limit.
and i have it set to 6k as the limit when they try test me.
they can only test the cars db at about 4.5k rpm

Are you perhaps known by them as being a bit of a boy-racer ?

I was actually pulled over while I had my Straight-through twin exit setup on the car (those at limerick racecourse last year will know it)..

Long story short - I'd overtaken what appeared to be a middle aged man driving in a boring car in a boring way.

The boring car promptly turned on it's wee blue lights and pulled me over.
(I should mention that this was on a dual carriage section and he was in the slow lane - it's 60kph section, and during the manuovre I did a wee bit more, but not much)

I got a stern talking to for "driving like a muppet", but there was no mention of the almighty "bang and clatter" noise coiming from the rear of my two toned fto.

There's obviously something going on in your local area that has the Garda on their toes..

actually iv only been stopped once by the gards since i got the car....
(the time the gards told me i had an engine transplant.)

but yet another lad i know was done for having a car thats too loud.

Dan - I understood that the Exhaust control valve you have fitted can almost completely close - even at idle - so surely that must considerably lower the sound level of your exhaust.

You have a 8000 + rpm rev limit on the GPX - I don't think a Guard is gonna buy the fact you can only rev to 5500 rpm when he can see a 8000rpm red line.

If you really need to reduce the sound - I'd suggest something along the lines of an additional Exhaust baffle. There are loads of universal type removable exhaust baffles on ebay.

humm... i donno, but you could say. im not revving my car at idle as its bad for the car and say thats why theres a limiter

I really don't think that theres an actual law in relation to decible levels - only EU guidelines that have never actually made it to Irish law. And 75db is ridiculously low - a standard Zed is capable of 90db. Mine is more like 100db+ and I've had it out with a Garda recently who basically admitted that there was no law relating to the actual DB level - he asked was the exhaust standard - I told him it came on the car from Japan - he said "Well you might get into trouble with it further down the line when these laws come into being" - I said I'd cross that bridge when I came to it and away he went! He was in all fairness fairly sound though. I do think the majority of guards are actually sound - a lot will come down to how you deal with them. Treat them with respect and you will have respect shown to you.

Having said all that - there is a law against actively creating a noise nuisance though its fairly general - I believe this is what the guards will try and prosecute under at the moment:-

"Under Section 51 of the Local Government Act 1963 it is an offence to make any noise or variation which is so loud, continuous or repeated or at such time as to give reasonable cause for annoyance to neighbours" - There are also procedures for securing the abatement of the noise

As you can see its VERY general and really comes down to the opinion of the Garda in question.

Very general indeed, if I were stopped for this reason I would request to be shown the law that states this 74db level, because surely they can't just pick any figure out of the air!

The guards apply it in the context that if you are flying around an urban area with a loud exhaust then you are upsetting the neighbours!

Hmm, unusual one all right though. Anyone whose ever looked at a planning permission form when its granted will know that one of the items that always a condition is that the noise has to be below certain Db when working outside hours. So you can see where they're coming from 'outside hours', but if they allow massive construction noise between 8am and 5pm surely an exhaust wouldnt make a diference between them hours, its the hours between 5pm and 8am you could have a problem with. Though I've got stopped a few times and only once has there been anything said about noise.
