Can you mix Semi Synthetic oil with Mineral Oil?

Postby adrian » Thu May 03, 2007 5:21 pm

Hi all,

My mechanic uses Shell Helix 10W40 Semi Synthetic oil in my 911. However, he is over 100 miles away and all I can get locally is Shell Helix Fully Synthetic and Helix Mineral oil. Which should I buy to be able to mix for top ups into my engine? I bought the mineral one but I will exchange it for fully synthetic if you guys can let me know...

Thanks a mil.

Mixing mineral and fully synth wouldn't be the way to go, they have very different propertiesd under different loads. 10W40 semi (e.g Magnetec - what I always use in ther FTO) is available from most Halfords and the like, surely theres one near you?

10W 40 should be easy to get hold of in a variety of different brands.
FWIW - Its far better to be mixing a litre of fully synth into 4/5 litres of semi rather than the other way around so I wouldn't worry too much about it - I've done it before on lesser cars and had no adverse effects.

I'd probably be more concerned about getting the right grade and type of oil than the brand - pick up some semi synth in 10W 40 for a different brand - Halfords in Coolock probably do it - or even the motor factors in Artane.

Ya, for some reason the Shell Helix fully synth is a bit scarce at the moment... even with contacts in Shell it took a week or so to get a few litres when I was changing oil a couple of months ago.

Try to get the semi-synth I'd say, as the guys say it would be better to mix fully synth with semi rather than mineral oil, but its best not to be mixing your grades of oil at all.

It's a bit like drink really..

Fine Wine on it's own - Grand
Stella on it's own - Alright

The two of them together... You'd think it'd be "Grand Alright".. Well it's more like "Ghraailghtd!!!" :smt078 and then theres suspect fluid on a sidewalk somewhere.

Don't really wanna do that to my car... although it might be alright for some..
