Brake Fluid Resevoir Question

Postby pergau » Mon Feb 05, 2007 3:14 pm

Hi, My handbrake warning light is coming on occasionally. I've checked that it isn't pads (seem to be ok) and the switch doesn't seem to be sticking so I presume that it must be the brake fluid or the diaphragm.

The thing is that I can't open the resevoir. I've tried twisting it both ways and it won't budge. I'm fairly strong and i'm worried that if I twist much harder that the mounting will break.

Is there a knack to opening them and do you twist clockwise or anticlockwise?

Talk about blowing your own trumpet

Anti-clockwise to open, it can be tough to get the cap off the resevoir at times, use a rag or a towel to get some more grip. I doubt you would ende up breaking the mounting.

Mine opens the same as all the others..

twists the same way as the oil lid..

- Oh and if you're afraid of applying too much force - use your other hand to hold onto the reservoir itself while twisting.. (should be done by the pool if you have one ..Cough) )

..of if you have wd40 you might want to try applying some..while the res is sealed up...don't get it in there though..

Thanks for all the advice - and the help with the car.

If any of you have jam jars that are particularly stuck, just drop them around to me.

No, can't budge it. My NCT is due this month as is a service so I'll leave it to Dr Nolan.

I occasionaly have the same problem. It managed to go through the NCT last month though.
If you find the fault please let me know as my mechanic could not find the reason the light goes on even after a full service and again while the car was in for a new starter motor.
Fluid levels OK, brakes OK, switch OK :smt017

I took the front wheels off at the weekend and the front pads are fairly worn. It's only when you take off the wheels and get a proper look that I saw that. so I think that I have solved the mystery.

Ordered a set of greenstuff pads from Camskills at the weekend so hopefully, they will be bedded in for the NCT.
