7" screen in dash

Postby joe 90 » Thu Aug 19, 2004 3:17 pm

I was at a car show in Limerick two months ago and seen an fto with a 7" screen in the dash in replacement of the double bin stereo. The ash tray and cigarette lighter were also taken out. The stereo was put back in, in replacement of the two center air vents :!: It looked very classy and im planning on doing the same. Has anybody taken this on before and if so did you run into any difficulties :?:

Cheers lads

This is something that I definitely want to do but just don't have the time at the moment. Gonna have a computer installed in to the car, with a touchscreen in the dash.

Touchscreens, car psu's & voltage regulators etc can be got here
http://www.mp3car.com/store/
There not two expensive.

There's alot of touchscreen based software that will run the system.
Media engine is the one Im thinking about but don't care as long
as it does the usual, mp3, dvd, divx, GPS(not to fussed on this), TV & radio. There's more info & forums here
http://www.digital-car.co.uk/

I found one guy in the uk that his done in his fto but he didn't
integrate his screen into the dash properly

When I do eventually get round to it, the installation
and unforeseen problems will be a nightmare but it
will all be worth it!

I THINK YOU SAW MY CAR AT THE SHOW IN LIMERICK ( DARK BLUE GR)
IT ONLY TOOK ME 3 NIGHTS TO DO JOB FROM START TO FINISH WITH NO PROBLEMS AT ALL
FIRST I REMOVED UPPER COWLING AND UNSCREWED THE HEATER VENTS, THEN CUT OUT THE OPENING SLIGHTY TO ACCEPT THE HEAD UNIT PLATE - THIS ALLOW ME TO PUT THE HEAD UNIT IN ABOVE THE HEATER CONTROLS
I THEN REMOVED THE CENTRE CONSOLE AND CUT IT ACROSS, JUST ABOVE THE ASHTRAY/CIG LIGHTER, THIS LEFT ME WITH JUST THE LOWER HALF OF THE CENTRE CONSOLE - I THEN MADE A NEW UPPER HALF TO THE CENTRE CONOLE FROM 9MM MDF, ROUNDED THE EDGES WITH A ROUTER, CUT THE HOLE IN FOR SCREEN, AND THE FIBREGLASSED IT TO ORIGINAL LOWER HALF OF CONSOLE, ALSO FIBREGLASSING OVER THE ASHTRAY AND LIGHTER HOLES - THEN COVERED THE WHOLE THING IN ALCANTARA
I HAD TO CUT SMALL RECESSES IN BACK AT THE TOP WHERE THE SCREW HEADS FOR THE UPPER COWLING WERE AND WHEN I PUT IT ALL BACK TOGETHER THE UPPER COWLING KEEPS THE TOP PART OF THE CONSLE IN POSITION PERFECTLY
I HOPE THIS HELPS BUT LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEMS
P.S THE PLAY STATION 2 FITS PERFECT IN THE GLOVE BOX !!

Gary, I'd like to add your FTO to the Gallary if you'd be willing to send me over 4 or 5 pics, it would be a welcome addition. By the way, it looks like your CAPS LOCK is stuck ;)
