Postby eamop » Tue May 04, 2010 12:34 pm

i have a 95 v6 mivec with 180k km on it and on a run to the airport from portarlington where im living which is about 53 mile so 106 round trip im using nearly €30 in petrol a rough calculation puts this at about 18mpg is this right im taking it fairly easy on that trip too, only accellerating hard if i need to overtake and obeying speed limits etc and if this is bad mpg what are the best ways to improve it

thanks folks

I get about around 27 most of the time. The big no no for me are carrying a lot of weight in the car as it seems to drink petrol then. If you have the pedal to the floor a good bit is will use quite a bit too although it is fun :D

I regularly achieved 28 mpg in the FTO when I had it. Even my 418bhp SC 350Z gets around 20mpg so if you're only getting 18mpg in an FTO - I'd be looking at the reasons why - when was the last time it had a service - plugs changed etc?

not sure as i dont have it that long but a full service is next on the cards oil and filter air filter is an aftermarket mushroom type so ill clean that fuel filter and plugs i know the rear plugs are tricky what has to be removed for these and will i see a good increase in mpg from changing the plugs

Lambda and temp sensors are usually first port of call I think?

Are you filling the car up to the brim -to where you can actually see the petrol level in the filler neck? or are you just filling it up to the point when the pump cuts out? (if so you need to keep going as the tank will take much more, the air locked design of the filler neck causes the petrol pump to cut out early -real pain in the ass to fill the car up properly).
Filling it up to the brim is the only way to get proper mpg readings. I'm getting mid 20's mpg

Gauge on the dash is connected to coolant temp sensor.

i was full sure there was two seperate sensors one the coolant temp sensor which controls the fan on the rad and the temp gauge sensors which controls the gauge in the dash im open to correction on that though

Hey guys i got only 19.77 MPG(7km/L) on my stock auto GPX that i recently bought. The only mod i've got is an open pod filter with CAI. Does anyone know what could be the problem? Btw, i have already reset the ECU as a precaution but still got the same figure on the next fuel top up.

I've been getting between 16 and 20 MPG but I've just done the Coolant Temp Sender and the leads. It felt more responsive today and there was a distinct lack of a smell of fuel. I'll keep you posted as to how I get on.

Mine's drinking fuel at the moment due to a knackered stepper motor. This is a very common problem that can present a variety of different symptoms, so I'd give that a look too. If you can smell unburnt petrol in the exhaust at any time or get the occasional (however small) backfire, there's a good chance it's overfuelling and you can start checking all the usual suspects.

I get late 20's mark.

No harm changing your coolant TS, mine was eating petrol recently because of an old one, so simple to replace!

when i first got my fto i calculated i was getting 32mpg which i was shocked with seems everyone heard the myth about them drinking petrol like water so did it a few times and still getting the same results.
Its going im for a good service tomorrow so it should still keep it up

Yeah, I remember get 30+ MPG in mine regularly ("spirited" runs are obviously a good bit less). Think weight reduction seems to be a big help.

I'll add Throttle position sensor to the mix, this can also impact on fuel consumption. Undertake a diagnostic check (search the forum) to determine is any of the sensors are at fault.

Also, you never mentioned your driving habits, urban / motorway etc.

Hi i have just went for a diagnostic test and the mechanic checked that there wasn't any error codes at all.

On a side note, i noticed the exhaust smell from my car has quite a toxic kind of smell. It's hard to describe though it's not the usual smell from most cars. Thus i'm wondering if it has anything to do with burning the fuel improperly?

While driving, i do feel the car seems sluggish. The engine note seems to be louder than what the car should actually be going at. My tiptronic gearbox has also recently been re-con so i guess its safe to say that it should not be the cause of it.

For my driving habits, i can say i have been mostly light-footed in a urban congested area.

Not that it needs a routine service is it? As in engine and gearbox oil and filters?

A bottle of redX might help a little with the fumes, as it will clean out the engine's gunk that it builds up after all the years.
