My Failing FTO! - 2nd time - HELP!!!

Postby IrishPhoenix » Thu Nov 10, 2005 7:04 am

Brought my FTo back to NCT yesterday. The lights passed this time but the emissions were still too high. Even with 'Red Lining' it, dip-taining it and using valve cleaners and having the garage look at it, it still failed!! I was really annoyed at the supervisor down there and all he said was that Mirages and FTO's sometimes have to come back loads of times because of this problem!!!

My CO emissions dropped from 0.80% to 0.53% this time. The garage are taking it back again and bringing it to an exhaust specialist, but I dont need this kind of stress. More time down the drain. Looking at the previous forum I see it could be the cat, but I would'nt of thought a 97 car with low mileage would cause so much trouble. :(

Any Suggestions?
You know, somebody actually complimented me on my driving today. They left a little note on the windscreen, it said 'Parking Fine'.

I would suggest swopping out the CAT for the NCT. Get a loan of a Cat for a few days. You can have mine if you like (you'll need to travel to Clare though) - its currently sitting in the shed awaiting the next time I want to do the NCT.

Out of interest - do you have a performance exhaust or is it still standard?

exhaust

Postby IrishPhoenix » Thu Nov 10, 2005 1:00 pm

The exhaust that came with the car is a double exhaust pipe. Not like some of the huge single ones I see on most cars (the ones that are so big you come down the next morning to find a tramp sleeping in it! lol). Thanks for the offer. I'll let you know once the garage has one more look at it. A mate of mine lives in clare so maybe he could pick it up if it comes to that. Very frustrating all this NCT lark. I wonder where i stand if i'm left with a dud car. Would the SIMI help out if I get no joy?

is yours a GPX or a GR?

i've a cat from my GS that would do the job, mine passed the NCT no problems, you're more than welcome to borrow it plus i'm just next door to motor point.

Would have thought the GR/GPX cat would be the same.
AFAIK - its just a different bore from the CAT back.

You're a lot closer than me though so I'd take Dave up on the offer IP.

flange size doesn't make a difference no? thought that with the GPX having a large bore the rear flange might be slightly different but it;s only an assumption, not basing that on fact!!

"On mature recollection" You could be right there - the flange is likely a different size on the GPX to the GR/GS.

Yup - the GS and GR cat's are the same - it's just the flange sizes that are diffferent between the GPX and the GR/GS cats - I bought an old & borken GR cat from which I removed the inside honeycomb & I fitted to my GS as a stealth decat (worked out way cheaper too).....

Flange sizes - lol

Postby IrishPhoenix » Thu Nov 10, 2005 3:12 pm

Mine is a GX. Not sure about the flange sizes. Does size really matter? lol Thanks for the offer. I'll see what happens and I'll let you know :)
