Me - When the time comes I'll just change my backbox back to standard and keep my decats/Y pipe and centre section freeflow. I'd like to see any guard tell me that its not a standard exhaust from looking at the tailpipes.

Some idiot politican on radio this evening claiming it was being done in the name of road safety. Like not having a backbox or exhaust on some young fellas Civic is going to make them drive any more carefully. If anything, having a loud exhaust on your car makes you think twice about putting the foot down excessively cause you are advertising the fact to all and sundry that you are speeding.

Its not going to be enforced in any case - not if the the raft of recent "laws" are anything to go by. When was the last time you heard of someone being stopped for driving with a mobile phone stuck to their ear? It'll just be another random sh1te charge a guard will be able to target at some poor Corsa owning young fella that has been stopped at a checkpoint.

If they try and enforce it through the NCT then its very easy to swop exhausts after you have passed. Most modified cars have to do it anyway at the moment as they switch Cats/DeCats.

Are you serious? they're really enforcing it. unfortunately people still haven't copped on and continue to get caught.

On 2 occasions, I've been in traffic and seen cops (motorbike) come up alongside someone on the phone in traffic and charge them.
As well as that, last month I saw a lady on the way out towards the airport from the city centre stopped and indicating a right turn, while on the mobile.A Garda on a motorbike coming towards her paased her by, then did a U turn, pulled in behind her, followed her onto the minor road and stopped her for a chat.

Interesting but pretty uninforcable. What about all of the Jap cars coming in with aftermarket exhausts? Guards will have a field day with this one, the youngfla's (and some of the aulfla's!) are bollixed. Can you imagine the amount of back boxes that will end up on ebay?!

Must be enforced more vigorously in Dublin then cause I've yet to hear of anyone being stopped in this neck of the woods and there is still a very large percentage of people driving with phones stuck to their ears.

That article reminds me of the stupid law in Belarus... Drivers over there are not allowed to drive a car with even smallest modifications eg. any additions to the body, tinted windows, even stickers on the car.

Too right - stickers should be a straight to jail offense anyways!

This is just a weak attempt at targetting the growing problem with young driver fatalities

How they hope to tackle the problem with such inane laws is beyond me - there is a simple solution and that is to adopt a similar system for driving tests as exists in Germany - mandatory driving lessons, provisional licence holders only allowed to drive with registered driving instructors in dual control cars and once you pass your test you have 1 year probation.

The problem in Ireland is we see driving as a right but in reality it is a privilige which should be earned - I was resentful of my parents for refusing to allow me use their car unaccompanied while I was a young learner but now I have to admit to being grateful as I've learnt to drive with intelligence - something most genuine car enthusiasts appreciate.

I personally hate the boy racer culture as they give genuine car enthusiats a bad name - there are many cars I wouldn't ever buy because of the image associated to them courtesy of the boy racer chav. And I can't count the number of times some wannabe in his fancy sh!t-mobile has tried to goad me into a race - my attitude is work away ar$eh0le and I'll wave at you when I pass you in a ditch.

Unfortunatley cars are just too accessible these days and that is something the government should spend more time regulating!

So seeing as this is for noise pollution, I take it they're banning every scooter in Europe, and the majority of motorbikes, whats next, barking dogs and screaming babies? I would love to stick a polliticians ear right next to a scooter just when its taking off and then see which he thinks is louder, scooter or the gentle purring of a beautiful V6.
I cant see this being enforced, look at it this way, number plates are supposed to be of a certain type and standard, yet there are loads of cars with the wrong ones, change 'em for the NCT and thats it. Neon lights are illegal, yet they still sell them and fit them.
Also, if it says the exhaust has to be standard, what if you have a RalliArt exhaust? RalliArt is a part of Mitsubishi more or less, so does that mean that anything RalliArt is Mitsubishi also, therefore a RalliArt exhaust is a Mitsubishi exhaust, therefore.....standard!

I don't think it can be enforced really. How many Jap Imports have you seen come in with a standard exhaust on them? none. I think its just a new law so it will enabled the cops more leverage when dealing with home made exhausts etc. straight through pipes and that sort. I really don't think any JASMA certed jap exhaust will be a problem. Not unless you have a straight through pipe instead of a cat. Mine you thats hardly enforced either. I have a milltek catbox which is only slightly louder than the cat, and I can switch it around for NCT time. no hassles.
